Ford to launch a small car in India in 2011, thanks to Figo's success!
Code named as "B156", the small car from Ford will hit the market in 2011, as per the sources. Also, owing to the fast growing SUV segment, Ford will develop a compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) based on the Figo platform and also another hatchback variant of Fiesta.
Ford has been reaping a never before success so soon after the launch of its small car Figo, which has sold a striking 16000 numbers in just three months since its launch and has got 21000 further bookings and customers are waiting for the delivery.
Ford has plans to launch a new product every 12 to 18 months and would prefer silent in speculating its future product strategy. The American car maker is studying the Indian market for scopes in various car segments and will launch its products accordingly.
According to Michael Boneham, the MD of Ford India has mentioned that the future cars to be launched in India will be designed for global markets too thereby making its Chennai factory, a small car export hub. Due to the promising small car market in India, Ford which has got only a very small 3% share in Indian passenger car market inspite of its arrival in India a decade ago, will focus to improve its sales numbers through Figo like small cars and SUVs.
Also, Ford's exports of its cars will continue with Figo too. The company started exporting its Figo cars to South Africa, while the 1.2 and 1.4 L engines manufactured in Figo's Maraimalainagar plant (Chennai) supplies engines to Indonesia.
