By Suparna Chakaraborthy

Ford India's MD and President, Mr. Michael Boneham flagged off 1200 Figos to Durban, South Africa from the Chennai Port. Captain Subash Kumar was also present in the function. According to the MD of Ford India, there is an order for 5000 Figo cars from South Africa and the company after studying the emerging markets and its demands, will also announce the new destinations for exporting Figos other than Europe and US.

Boneham said that the company is aiming to make India an export hub for Figo. Ford India manufactures Figo in the Chennai plant and recently second shift operations commenced and this will provide 30-40% more cars, in order to deliver the cars quickly to the domestic as well as the international markets.

Boneham is confident that just as Figo took the Indian market by storm, it will also make a similar impact in South Africa. In India, Ford received 24000 bookings in just 4 months of the car's introduction in India, which has made the company reach sky heights in sales charts, for instance, in June 2010, Ford achieved a 267% sales growth when compared with the sales during June 2009.

Ford India's engine manufacturing plant helps the company to provide 2500 engines to Thailand every month. Ford is also exporting Fiesta for the past 4 years. In order to increase the production, more workers are needed and Ford is planning to recruit 700 people most of whom will be diploma holders.
