Fiat To Re-enter The US Market

By Suparna Chakaraborthy

By fuelling its new Fiat 500 sub compact, the Italian car maker Fiat is making a re-entry into the roads of the US. The move comes after the take over the US car maker Chrysler last year and this time Fiat is too shrewd to taste the success.

It was in 1983 that Fiat made exit from the US market on the account of rusting problems and unable to deliver to the needs of prescribed quality standards. However this venture now is a challenge to Fiat to prove its mettle in providing the quality at its best.

The new product is peppy Fiat 500 subcompact at the cost of 500 which is still lesser by 00 than the competitor Mini Cooper. Technically, Fiat 500 will be fitted with a 1.4 lit, 4-cylinder engine and three-doors and will be a hatchback. Termed as the Cinquecento, the car was on display at the Los Angeles international Auto show recently.

Fiat has designed and built the car in Chrysler Toluca unit of Mexico-based plant. Initially there will be 130 dealers in the country spread over 39 states of which the loyal dealers of the erstwhile Chrysler will get the top priority.

However, Fiat has instructed such dealers to allocate exclusive sales and service outlets with the European flavor. Fiat has announced that the convertible version of this Fiat 500, for electric and hybrid versions, will be offered in 2011 along with another 4-door version. The initial target for the US market will be 50,000 units of Fiat 500 comprising the markets of Canada too. Otherwise the numbers would be exactly the one derived by Mini last year. The target for the subsequent years will go up to 1 lakh when more models would add to the platform in another four years.
