Cars from General Motors on SAIC platform in 2011
The US car maker General Motors said that the proposed deal of passenger cars and commercial vehicles on Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation platform will come into effect from 2011. The deal between two companies is on 50:50 at 0 million and the deal will effect the expansion activities at Halol plant for LCVs from SAIC"s stable. The deal envisaged GM to have a more number of vehicles to choose from the ones under SAIC platform. There will be LCVs of 1 tonne capacity in 2012, followed by passenger cars, said the President and MD for GM India. Of these, passenger cars will run on Chevrolet brands while it is to be decided on the branding for three models of LCVs. GM India is to export LCVs to other markets like South America and South East Asia.
The deal has made the official body to restructuring having equal say on the 6-member board. The JV has been in effect since February and nine members from SAIC are likely to get berth in the team for commercial vehicles. The deal will involve 50million US dollars to finalize the change in toolings in the existing plant. The Halol facility has the capacity of 85000 units annually and will continue to deliver the same after the entry of SAIC passenger cars. This Halol facility is looking after the production of Tavera and Aveo muvs and are likely to be shifted to Talegaon. GM India"s current range includes Chevrolet Spark, Chevrolet U-VA, Chevrolet Aveo, Chevrolet SRV, Chevrolet Optra Magnum, Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Tavera, Chevrolet Captiva, made from the two plants of Halol and Talegaon.
