Car And Motorcycle Of The Year 2009
The car and bike of the year awards are considered prestigious in the automobile industry. The fact that the jury includes automobile journalists from major automobile magazines like Overdrive, Car India, BBC Top Gear and Auto India, lends credibility to the awards.
Usually only cars and bikes launched in 2008 qualify for the competition. That left a very small group of bikes to be nominated for the grand prize. Of these the finalists were Yamaha YZF R15, FZ16 and Honda Stunner. In the 4 wheel segment, the competition was cut throat with every major car maker launching one car or another. The competition included Volkswagen Jetta, Hyundai i20, Tata Indica Vista, Skoda Fabia, Toyota Altis and the Maruti A-Star. The City beat the i20 by 6 points which was trailed by Fabia by another 4 points with 58 overall points. Similarly YZF R15 came up with 44 points followed by FZ16 with 37 points and Stunner with 21 points.
The Hyundai i10, Honda Civic and the Maruti Suzuki Swift wee the winners of previous years' Indian Car of the year awards. Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTS Fi was the Indian bike of the year 2008.
