Volvo To Drive On Its Own

Volvo S 60, Accident Proof Car
A car that is to drive on its own to hit the roads is not far away. Volvo seems to be the pioneer in coming up with the first ever "accident-proof car". The car would monitor its motions as it drives through the traffic using radar to control the distance.

The Swedish manufacturer is to make a proud presentation of Volvo S60, with automatic brakes, which will be unveiled at Detroit motor show next month. It is likely to hit the roads in 2010.

The car halts to a stop and can avert collision with a pedestrian or another automobile even while travelling in slow speed by sensing on its own A sophisticated cruise control system specially designed, enables to maintain a safe distance from another car in the front automatically.

The radar unit fitted in the car's grille not only detects what is in the front of the vehicle but also the speed of it. When the car feels that an apparent collision is to take place, a light automatically flashes on the windscreen display along with an audible warning to the driver, thereby alerting him. The brakes then play their part with an automatic application bringing the car to a halt.

"This technology helps us take an important step towards our long-term vision of designing cars that should not crash," the Telegraph quoted Thomas Broberg, the company's safety specialist as saying.

"Our aim for 2020 is that no one should be killed or injured in a Volvo car," he added. AGENCIES
