TVS Apache RTX Review: Best Adventure-Ready Motorcycle Under Rs 2 Lakh?
The TVS Apache RTX has entered the adventure motorcycle segment in India, with a starting price of Rs 1.99 lakh (ex-showroom). This new model stands out for its rally-inspired design, a brand-new engine, and a revised chassis. TVS aims to meet the growing demand for adventure touring motorcycles in the country with this latest addition to its Apache line-up.
The Apache RTX is available in three variants, offering a mix of features aimed at both everyday commuters and off-road enthusiasts. Its launch marks TVS’s debut in the mid-size adventure motorcycle segment, addressing long-standing customer demand for such a model.
The motorcycle features a new 300cc engine, advanced electronics, and a robust build. It is designed for both city rides and challenging terrains, promising versatility for varied riding conditions.
That said, we took the Apache RTX for a ride in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, to test its capabilities across both smooth and rough roads, as well as its performance on hilly terrain.
Design Highlights
The Apache RTX features a rally-inspired exterior, with an exposed chassis and a large windscreen for wind protection. The dual headlamps offer adjustable throw, helping riders adapt to different lighting conditions. The upright stance and broad handlebars give it a commanding presence on the road.
At the front, the 19-inch tyre and upside-down forks with 180mm travel are designed to absorb bumps and enable confident off-roading. The rear sports a 17-inch tyre, providing stability and improved grip across varied surfaces.
The overall design is functional and sturdy, with a wide, comfortable seat suitable for both rider and pillion. The exposed frame and metal components add to its rugged character, while practical features like the mounting point for a top box on the top variant enhance utility.
Tech Highlights
The Apache RTX comes with a 5-inch TFT display offering clear visibility even in direct sunlight. The system supports TVS’s X-Connect app, enabling smartphone connectivity and map mirroring directly on the dashboard, making navigation easier for long rides.
The seating position is upright, with a seat height of 835mm, suitable for most Indian riders. The handlebar is wide and offers a comfortable grip, making it easy to control the bike during both city rides and longer touring adventures.
The seat is well-padded and spacious, providing ample comfort for extended journeys. Both rider and pillion benefit from the ergonomic design, and the upright riding stance reduces fatigue over long distances.
Key features include ride-by-wire throttle, bi-directional quick shifter, cruise control, adjustable levers, ABS, and traction control. The TFT display is easy to read and operate, with a simple key-operated layout similar to other TVS models.
Additional accessories, such as panniers and a top box, are available for riders who need extra storage. The practical arrangement of controls and robust build quality make the Apache RTX well-suited for touring and daily use.
Specifications & Dimensions
The Apache RTX is powered by a new 300cc, single-cylinder RTX D4 engine, producing 36PS of power and 28.5Nm of torque. The engine is paired with a 6-speed transmission. Riders can choose from four ride modes: Urban, Rain, Tour, and Rally. The Rally mode allows the rear ABS to be switched off for improved off-road control.
The chassis is brand new, with a strong metal construction to handle the demands of adventure touring. The suspension setup features adjustable front forks and a monoshock at the rear, offering a balance between comfort and stability. The ground clearance stands at 200mm, suitable for bad roads and rough terrain.
Riding Impressions – On and Off-road
The engine is refined and delivers power smoothly across all riding modes. Acceleration is brisk, and the quick shifter makes gear changes effortless, especially useful on longer rides. The ride-by-wire throttle system responds quickly to inputs, allowing precise control in city traffic and on highways.
Suspension is tuned on the softer side, providing a comfortable ride over potholes and uneven surfaces. Even at high speeds, the bike remains stable. The large windscreen offers effective wind protection, and the seating position allows riders to stand up when tackling difficult terrain.
The tyres, with a 19-inch front and 17-inch rear, offer good grip on both tarmac and loose surfaces. Braking is progressive and effective, with a 60:40 front-to-rear ratio working well in most situations. The Rally mode, which deactivates rear ABS, adds extra fun and control for experienced riders during off-road sessions.
