Triumph Thruxton 400 Review: A New Era For Cafe Racers In India

Triumph Thruxton 400 has been launched in India at a starting price of Rs 2.74 lakh (ex-showroom). This modern café racer blends classic styling with a 398cc engine, clip-on bars, and bar-end mirrors. It is designed for riders who seek retro aesthetics combined with modern technology.

We tested the Thruxton 400 and noted its compact stance, sporty ergonomics, and vintage cues. It shares its foundation with the Speed 400 but features unique café racer bodywork, a reworked rear section, and a distinct riding position.

The design pays homage to the café racers of the 1950s and 60s. In those days, riders raced between cafés, which influenced the low, tucked riding posture and minimalist bodywork seen in this model.

The Thruxton 400 includes a round headlamp with Triumph’s signature detailing, a sculpted 13-litre fuel tank, and a long single seat with a removable rear cowl. The tail section is neater compared to the Speed 400, with a compact fender and tidy tail-light layout.

Triumph offers several colour choices, including solid and dual-tone schemes with contrast pinstripes and tank badges. Bar-end mirrors and clip-on handlebars complete the authentic café racer look while ensuring road usability.

Triumph Thruxton 400 – Design & Ergonomics

The front features a simple round lamp and compact indicators. The tank is large and shaped to support a tuck, with knee recesses for grip. Paint quality and badging stand out in person. Moreover, the bar-end mirrors are wide and stable at speed.

A rear seat cowl is fitted as standard for a single-seat look, and can be removed when needed. The rear subframe, fender, and tail-light have been redesigned to suit the café racer theme. Also, the clip-on handlebars sit lower than standard roadster’s bar, giving a more committed riding stance along with its slightly more rear set foot pegs. Overall, the stance is low and sporty, yet it remains manageable for daily use.

That said, the Thruxton 400 is aggressive enough for weekend canyon carving, yet comfortable enough for longer cruises. Also, thanks to its cowl, the wind resistance remains manageable on short highway stretches. However, taller riders may feel a bit cramped on longer rides, but for most, it's a smooth blend of form and function.

Triumph Thruxton 400 – Engine & Performance

Power comes from a 398cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine. It produces 42 PS and 37.5 Nm, paired with a 6-speed gearbox. Triumph quotes a top speed of 161 km/h. Also, thanks to throttle-by-wire the power delivery is smooth and predictable.

Overall, all these elements give the Thruxton 400 responsive acceleration and a strong mid-range, ideal for spirited rides through twisty backroads. With an expected 0-100 km/h time of around 6.7 seconds, the Thruxton 400 is distinctly quicker than its sibling, the Speed 400.

In terms of efficiency, the Thruxton averages 27 km/l in mixed riding conditions. So, with its 13-liter fuel tank, you can expect a range of approximately 300-360 km, depending on the riding style.

Triumph Thruxton 400 – Features & Safety

The instrument cluster is a part-analogue, part-digital unit. It shows speed, trip meters, fuel level, gear position, and service indicators. Dual-channel ABS is standard. The bike also includes switchable traction control and meets OBD-2B norms. Tyres are Apollo Alpha H1 tubeless units, fitted on alloy wheels, for good grip and easy upkeep.

Triumph Thruxton 400 - Hardware & Handling

Mechanically, the Thruxton carries over the tubular steel frame from the Speed 400 but features significant upgrades. It gets 43 mm USD forks, a monoshock rear suspension, and a shortened wheelbase of 1,376 mm, resulting in noticeably improved agility.

Suspension travel is 140 mm at the front and 130 mm at the rear with 10-step preload adjustment. This tune aims to balance city comfort without compromising highway manners and stability.
