Suzuki Burgman Street Review — India's First Maxi-Scooter

The Suzuki Burgman Street 125 is the latest offering from the company's stable and is India's first maxi-scooter.

Rating:

In India, the two-wheeler space is very vast; reason being the ability to easily commute in heavy traffic. The 110cc scooter sales still remain firm while manufacturers are experimenting with the 125cc segment. The 125cc category is gaining a lot of traction these days and there have been quite a few scooters launched in this space in the recent past.

The Suzuki Burgman Street 125 is the latest offering from the company's stable. The Burgman is India's first maxi-scooter and looks completely different from the ocean of scooters on the roads today. This scooter has been designed specifically for India and it borrows its styling cues from Suzuki's international elder sibling — the Suzuki Burgman 650.

Just like the Suzuki Intruder 150 is based on the Gixxer platform, the Burgman Street also shares its underpinning from the best-selling scooter from Japanese bike-maker's portfolio — the Suzuki Access 125.So, does the Burgman prove its Rs 8,800 worth over the Access? Or is it just the Access dressed up in some fancy clothes? Read on to find out!

At first glance, the Suzuki Burgman Street proves to be a big head-turner. That's because there was nothing like it on the Indian market till now. The one thing that makes it appealing to the eye is its sheer bulk and size. Up front, the big apron with the small flyscreen gives it a commanding presence. The all-LED headlights (which offer a great throw) with DRLs are placed just below the flyscreen. The turn indicators are neatly integrated into the front apron.

As you move to the side, you will notice that the Burgman features neat panels with sculpted creases. The scooter also gets a chrome ‘Burgman Street' badge on the side; giving it a premium look. At the rear, the neatly-carved LED tail light looks really good but I would have been more impressed if the indicators were also LEDs instead of being halogen units.

Adding to its bulkiness, the Burgman features a long, stepped single-piece seat. The seat offers a lot of cushioning and is really comfortable for the rider as well as for the pillion. There is also a large grab rail at the end. The scooter gets a chunky and sporty-looking exhaust muffler which matches its overall aura.

The only thing that I felt to be bit disproportionate was the 10-inch alloy wheel with 100 mm tyre. Suzuki could have fitted the scooter with a fatter rear tyre, which would've complimented the large rear section.

The Burgman Street is also the first scooter from Suzuki to get a fully digital instrument cluster. The screen is big and is backlit in white, making it easy to read even on a bright sunny day. The screen features the speedometer, odometer, two trip meters, a clock and the fuel gauge. The fit and finish of the switchgear are decent but could have been a bit better to match its premium feel.

The Burgman Street comes loaded with quite a few features, including two large storage compartments at the front. Suzuki says that one is a bottle holder which has a capacity of around two-litres. The other one is a compartment with an optional 12W charging socket inside. It also offers a lot of space to accommodate a phone and wallet but would have been better if that lid had a lock to it.

Moving on, there are two hooks at the front and they come really handy when you are out for some grocery shopping. The scooter's footboard is really broad and additionally, the company has provided a forward-biased position footrest which gives a unique riding position. The scooter also features an aluminium footrest for the pillion. The underseat storage is opened via the multi-function key slot and has a capacity of 21.5 litres; the largest in its class. But sadly, there is no LED light in the boot and a full-face helmet won't fit in there.

Powering the Burgman Street is the same engine as on the Access 125 - a 124 cc, single-cylinder engine which makes 8.6bhp at 7,000rpm and 10.2Nm of peak torque at 5,000rpm. The scooter weighs around eight kilograms more than its sibling but still feels really peppy and quick. This engine has got a good mid-range and this makes overtaking easy in urban road conditions. Though the engine is smooth, it still tends to make a harsh noise while riding at high speeds.

The Burgman has carried forward the handling characteristics of the Access and though it is big and bulky in size, squeezing it through traffic is relatively easy. The Suzuki Eco Performance (SEP) technology offers optimal fuel-efficiency without compromising much on performance. Moreover, the CBS (combined brake) unit enables operation of both brakes while applying the left brake (rear) lever. Though the bite from the brakes is good, it takes a while for the scooter to halt and under hard braking, the rear wheel tends to lock up. Braking duties are taken care with a disc brake unit at the front and a drum unit at the rear.

The Suzuki Burgman Street features a telescopic front fork and a monoshock at the rear. The suspension unit absorbs bumps decently-well at moderate speeds. One thing that I noticed as I picked up the scooter was that the handlebar is set lower than that of the Access and constantly hits the knee while taking U-turns. While taller riders might find this a bit annoying, the Suzuki Burgman Street is the only scooter on the market which does not look small for riders who are 6-feet plus.

Suzuki claims that the Burgman will give a mileage of around 53km/l. Well, after testing it in real-world conditions, the scooter returned us an average of around 45km/l, which is not bad for a 125cc scooter. The tank capacity is 5.6 litres and after brimming it up, you can easily get a range of around 250 kilometers.

Promeet Ghosh Thinks!

People always have a knack for fancy things and the Burgman Street is no less. So, India's first maxi-scooter will definitely grab a lot of attention, especially among the youth. But all of this does not come cheap. At a price tag of Rs 68,000 ex-showroom (Mumbai), the Burgman is the second most expensive scooter in this segment after the Vespa 125.

Final Verdict

The Suzuki Burgman Street looks good, rides good and handles excellently. The Access is close to Rs 8,000 cheaper than the Burgman and can provide everything that this scooter can. But, if you have some extra thousands to spare and want something fancy with a lot of utility, the Burgman will be the perfect choice.
