2017 Tokyo Motor Show: Yamaha Reveals Niken Leaning Three-Wheeler

Yamaha has revealed the Niken leaning three-wheeler at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show.

Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer has revealed a new tilting three-wheeler, the Niken at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show.

The Yamaha Niken is based on the popular MT-09 platform and it has two wheels at the front which enhance the grip when leaning into corners.

The Yamaha Niken is the first production leaning three-wheeler. President of Yamaha Hiroyuki Yanagi unveiled the three-wheeler in Tokyo. The company calls it as a Leaning Multi-Wheeler (LMW). The overall styling of the three-wheeler is aggressive with a sharp and edgy design.

The front end of the Niken features two 15-inch wheels with dual-tube upside-down forks on each wheel. Both the wheels operate independently and lean when going around a corner. The twin headlamp setup and a beak-shaped front cowl with a windscreen enhance the looks of the three-wheeler.

2017 Tokyo Motor Show: Yamaha Reveals Niken Leaning Three-Wheeler

Yamaha has revealed that the Niken will draw power from a liquid-cooled, fuel injected, inline three-cylinder engine. The engine capacity and other technical details will be announced at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan on November 6, 2017.

    Yamaha states the Niken will be equipped with the Leaning Multi-Wheel Technology which will reduce the effect of changing road surface and provides stability when going around corners. The Niken also features wide single piece handlebar and a digital instrument cluster.

    Yamaha is the not the first manufacturer to reveal such a three-wheeler. Piaggio had previously developed a similar vehicle called as MP3. The Niken looks stylish and the twin front wheels do not spoil the looks of the vehicle. The two wheels work flawlessly by leaning when cornering. Yamaha has confirmed the production of the Niken. Expect the three-wheeler to hit the roads by May 2018.
