The Jaguar's first-ever SUV F-Pace was crowned the 2017 World Car of the Year this week at the New York Auto Show. It's the first time an SUV has won the award in its 13-year history.

After months of discussion by a panel of 75 international automotive journalists that began back in September 2016 at the Paris Motor Show, the underdog Jaguar F-Pace won the prestigious award, making it the first SUV ever to do so.

Jaguar's first-ever SUV beats the Audi Q5 and Volkswagen Tiguan for the award. The F-Pace also won the World Car Design of the year award.

All the finalists were SUVs, which is a sign of the growing popularity of such vehicles and the growing importance given to them by car manufacturers.

Dr Ralf Speth, CEO, Jaguar Land Rover, said, "Winning these two awards endorses the talent and great work of our teams that have delivered the world's most practical sports car and Jaguar's fastest-selling vehicle."

Other winners for 2017 include the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which won the 2017 World Luxury Car award, the Porsche Boxster/Cayman, which took home the title of the World Performance Car Award.

The Toyota Prius Prime won the World Green Car award, and the BMW i3, which took home the World Urban Car award.

The Jaguar F-Pace follows the Mazda MX-5 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, which took home the awards in 2016 and 2015, respectively.

The India-spec Jaguar F-Pace is available in the 2.0-litre petrol and 3.0-litre diesel engine.
