2017 Geneva Motor Show: Volkswagen Unveils Sedric Self-Driving Van
Volkswagen Sedric is a level 5 autonomous vehicle -- a sort of hybrid between car ownership and ride-sharing.
Meet Sedric, Volkswagen's innovative concept for the future of self-driving. Sedric is fully autonomous, indicating it has no steering wheel or pedals, and it can be summoned at the push of a button for ride-hailing trips, a la Uber and Ola.

VW states that the Sedric (a blend of the words self-driving car) is very much a cross-brand concepts platform, presenting opinions of what the mobility of the future could develop to be like.

More than just a car, the company is pitching Sedric as a kind of rolling digital assistant as well. You'll presumably be able to tell the vehicle where to drive you, how to get there. The windshield isn't a windshield either; it's an OLED display that feeds passengers data concerning their surroundings.

Vehicle operation is achieved via a control called the Button, which becomes the connection between the user and Sedric. A single touch of the button calls up the vehicle and lights up with coloured signals and vibration feedback to proclaim that Sedric has reached and is ready for the ride.

The company calls this the "father" of various concepts, which means features of the design will show up in future concepts and perhaps even production vehicles.

CEO Mattias Müller said, "Many elements and functions of this concept car will reappear in vehicles from our brands in the coming years."
