2017 Geneva Motor Show: Land Rover Discovery Project Hero For Search & Rescue Revealed
Jaguar Land Rover's SVO division partners with the Austrian Red Cross to create a bespoke Discovery with life-saving search and rescue drone.
Land Rover has created a unique version of its Discovery, featuring a quadcopter drone that launches from the top of the SUV.

The drone even takes off and lands while the vehicle is moving, and it's meant primarily for search and rescue operations. The Austrian Red Cross is actively using the new Land Rover "Project Hero" vehicles and trialling the drone.

The new car, built by Jaguar Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division, was displayed at the 2017 Geneva motor show and is based on the 3.0-litre TD6-engined Discovery. It will be tested by emergency response teams with the Red Cross and is intended at expediting response times to emergencies.

The drone is installed on the roof and has a docking system that combines self-centering and magnetic retention technology that lets it land on the Discovery while it's moving.

The drone is guided via a tablet app, and sends live footage to the team, allowing them to get a close-up view of an earthquake, avalanche, or landslide from a secure distance. The goal is that the drone will help expedite disaster response time and save lives.

In addition to its drone-launching abilities, the Project Hero features a detachable cargo floor for extra storage, a panel behind the rear seats with mounting points for equipment, a multi-frequency radio system, LED lighting, and power outlets that accept multiple plug types.

The vehicle will assist the Austrian Red Cross first at its training centre in Erzberg, then in the mountains near the Eisenerz mining area, and finally in Vienna. The Red Cross will experiment Project Hero for 12 months beginning in June.

Land Rover has recently revealed an all-new SUV Velar, the SUV is positioned above the Evoque and below the new Discovery, below is an extensive photo gallery, click to view.
