Zero SR Debuts At EICMA, Forces You To Take Electric Bikes Seriously
The California based electric motorcycle manufacturer Zero has received much praise for its Zero S electric motorcycle. It was even gained the honour of being named European electric bike of 2013. Having said that, the bike did not gain much fan following among hardcore motorcycle enthusiasts.

This was mainly owing to the Zero's relatively sub-standard parts and lower than expected fit and finish. For instance, the Zero S never came with tyres which a motorcyclist would consider as a bike tyre and the suspensions were from a mountain bicycle. Zero seeks to rectify that mistake starting with the Zero SR which debuted at the EICMA show in Milan.
More Exciting News From EICMA 2013
What's got the attention of motorcyclists at EICMA are the 43mm diameter real motorcycle forks on the Zero SR. Riders can adjust both compression and rebound damping on these suspensions.
Meanwhile, the tyres seen on the Zero SR seem to be the same that are found on Suzuki GW250. Fit and finish also seem to have gone a notch up from Zero's previous bikes.
What's powering the Zero SR is a 660 amp motor fed by a 11.4 kWh battery. There is also an optional "Power Pack" which takes that figure up to 14.2 kWh.
The Zero SR delivers 67 HP and a massive 143.7 Nm of torque. According to Zero that's an improvement of 24 percent in terms of power and 56 percent in terms of torque over the Zero S.
All the torque results in the Zero SR packing some serious punch. 0-96 kmph (0-60 mph) comes in 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 164 km/h can be achieved.
Acceleration numbers are not surprising considering its an electric bike. What's more impressive is the claimed range.
Zero SR has a claimed range of 220 km and 112.65 km in the city and highway respectively. The previously mentioned "Power Pack" increases range to 275 km and 141.62 km respectively.
Charging the battery takes eight hours (10 hours with the optional battery pack). In case you have access to a CHAdeMO quick charge station that time reduces drastically to only an hour and a half.
Zero SR has a price of $16,995 in the U.S ($19,490 with the optional Power Pack) which is equivalent to INR 10.59 lakhs (INR 12.14 lakhs).
Since Zero is unlikely to enter India in the foreseeable future it is up to Indian OEMs such as Mahindra to bring a real electric bikes to Indian buyers. While we are not expecting a 65 HP performance machine, an electric two wheeler equivalent to a 250cc petrol motorcycle with the range of the Reva e2O would do miracles.
