Renault-Nissan Alliance & Daimler Looking To Expand Partnership
At the Frankfurt Auto Show the chiefs of Renault-Nissan Alliance and Daimler AG got together to discuss ways to expand their existing partnership. If you weren't aware of this already, the two parties consisting of three major automakers formed a partnership in 2010, with primary focus being on Europe.
The partnership started off with three "pillar projects", which has since then extended to 10 significant projects. The companies want to now take their partnership to the next level, but turning the focus from just Europe to the global level.
"While our initial collaboration focused strongly on European projects, we are now focusing on synergies in all key markets", Renault-Nissan Chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn said today at an annual media briefing on the partnership. "The largest economies of scale are always global."

Regarding the development on this matter Andy Palmer, technical head at Nissan stated that the companies are looking to upgrade the Mercedes MFA platform, reports Autocar. In place of it will come a new platform, being referred to as JC1 (joint compact first generation), a jointly developed platform that will support at least two different wheelbase lengths and widths and front and all-wheel drive layouts.
Among the products that have benefited from the alliance is the Infiniti Q50 sedan, which uses a Merc developed powertrain. The future products that will gain from this three way alliance will be the Infiniti Q30 luxury hatchback and not to mention, the Renault Twingo and the Daimler's Smart city cars.
