MOTIV.e City Car By Gordon Murray From Yamaha

Gordon Murray, the man who designed the legendary McLaren F1 and even Formula 1 race cars is now on a mission to develop eco friendly, compact, easy and inexpensive to manufacture city cars and helping him realise his dreams is none other than Yamaha.

At last week's Tokyo Motor Show Yamaha displayed the MOTIV.e City Car, an electric car designed by Gordon Murray Design. The MOTIV.e is the extension of Murray's previous T.27 concept electric car and much closer to production than the T.27. But its still a concept though.

For a car that's even smaller than a Smart ForTwo the MOTIV has a lot of power. More power than makes sense. There's an 8.8 kWh battery running an electric motor that generates a peak power of 25 kW and a peak torque of 896 Nm. Yes, that makes no sense at all.

What's stranger is that Yamaha has tuned the single speed transmission in such a way that all that torque is kept under check. The MOTIV can only go from 0-100 km/h in 15 seconds and it can go no faster than 105 km/h.

And that's considering the car weighs just 726 kg. The car does have good "real world" range of 160 km though and the battery takes three hours to charge.

The other important aspect of MOTIV.e is its construction technique, that's called iStream. It's a system used by Gordon Murray Design that makes use of Formula One composite technology delivering a lightweight and safe vehicle that also provides manufacturing flexibility amd low environmental impact.
