Caterham 620R Debuts At Goodwood Festival Of Speed
Caterham does not make the fastest Formula 1 car, but that is not the case with its road going, track day cars, the classic ‘Seven' series roadsters. The 2.0 liter Ford engine that powers it top end performance models has a lot of punch in it, but once again Caterham has managed to extract even more performance out of it and has fitted it in a new model which will debut at the 2013 Goodwood Festival Of Speed.
Caterham 620R is infact the most powerful Seven sports car built by the british car maker. However, it still maintains the classic Seven design which we have all come to love over the decades it has been in existence. Here is what you need to know about the R500 Superlight replacement.

While the 2.0 liter Ford Duratec engine powering the R500 was capable of 263 HP, it has been supercharged to deliver about 50 HP more in the 620R, so that now it outputs 311 HP and 219 lb-ft of torque against 177 lb-ft from the R500.

With more power comes more speed and the jump in torque figure means it can now reach 100 km/h from a standstill scarily fast, in less than 3 seconds, only slightly faster than the R500, but at these speeds thats still quite a lot.

The new top of the line Caterham weights just about 500 kg, which translates to a power to weight ratio of 620 HP. And hence the name 620R.

With that kind of power to weight ratio driving the wheels, the 620R can go on to reach a top speed of 250 km/h, which was 238 km/h for the R500.

Its not all about the powerful engine either. The 620R gets a more aerodynamic nose, while the engine cooling system is derived from Caterham racing machines.

Also, the 620R brings more grippy Avon ZZR tyres covering the 13 inch alloys, whereas the R500 were fitted with Avon CR500.

Caterham Cars CEO, Graham Macdonald, said, "The 620R is the most hardcore production Seven ever built for the road. The R500 claimed its place in motoring history as a benchmark for lightweight sports car performance but this new vehicle pushes the boundaries even further. While I wouldn't necessarily recommend this car for those inexperienced in driving Caterhams, we always ensure that even our fastest cars retain the manageable delivery of power that makes them accessible, despite the daunting statistics."

Caterham 620R is priced at £49,995 in the U.K, a premium of £7500 over the Superlight R500.
