Yellow Box Junctions Explained — Will It Help Solve India's Traffic Jam Crisis?
Yellow Box Junctions are a new type of road marking that are appearing on the streets of Indian cities. The boxes could prove to be the solution for the traffic jam crisis on Indian roads.
Travelling on the roads of Bangalore, you may notice large road markings as you pass through intersections. The yellow boxes are the latest attempt by the cops to cure the Garden city's slow and jam-packed streets.
The yellow boxes have turned up on the main intersections across the city. Ignoring the boxes may be perilous for your wallet and your chances at driving as the traffic cops of India's IT hub have a penalty program planned that will leave many quaking in fear.
So what are these yellow boxes and how can they help Bangalore and India's other major cities cope with the jam-packed city streets? Read on to find out.
Known as 'Yellow Box Junctions' the yellow boxes were first introduced in the United Kingdom in 1967. After a successful trial in London, the traffic buster soon became a common sight on the UK's roads.

So how should you approach one if you see it in front of you on the streets?
You may enter a Yellow Box Junction if the exit ahead is clear. However, ensure that there is space ahead for your vehicle to cross the junction without stopping in the box.
The only reason to stop in a Yellow Box Junction is if you're turning right. You can stop if there is car ahead of you about to turn right or if cars are coming the other way.
Now to the punishments you may suffer. The cops will enforce a fine of Rs 500 on a two-wheeler and Rs 700 for a four wheeler for stopping inside the box. This includes fines for wrong parking (Rs 100), signal jumping (Rs 100) and dangerous and reckless driving (Rs 300/ Rs 500 for two/four-wheelers).
Hopefully, the fines will be able to kerb the reckless nature of the hooligans amongst us. But hoping for that miracle may just be a pipe dream, considering our record so far.
