Highway Tolls May Be Waived For All But Commercial Vehicles
Highway tolls may be waived to all private vehicles and buses in their districts, apart from commercial vehicles, if the ministry accepts the proposal that is under consideration.
The loss to the revenue generated can be balanced by increasing the toll fare for commercial vehicles, suggests the proposal.
According to data by the road ministry, revenue made by personal vehicles is only INR 1,600 crore, out of INR 11,400 crore that is collected. That too keeping in mind that 50 percent of the traffic on highways are personal vehicles.
Ministry officials say that they are trying different ideas to help ease out congestion and burden for private vehicles, but still manage to generate enough revenue without undergoing a loss.
There have been many requests to take away toll gates once and for all, but this would hurt revenue. So will taking away toll gates help? Should private vehicles travel charge free? Should commercial vehicles charged higher? Do let us know your thoughts.
