April 2026 Car Retail Sales: Best-Ever April For Carmakers At 4.07 Lakh Units
India's passenger vehicle retail sales hit a record 4,07,355 units in April 2026, up 12.21% year-on-year from 3,63,028 units in April 2025, per FADA data. It is the strongest-ever April performance for the PV segment, with overall industry retail - spanning all vehicle categories - growing 12.94% YoY to 26,11,317 units.
The MoM picture is softer. Sales fell 7.45% from March 2026's 4,40,144 units, a predictable correction following the financial year-end inventory push. YoY growth was seen across five of the six automotive segments tracked by FADA.

Rural demand continued to outpace urban India, rising 20.40% YoY against urban growth of 7.11%. Alternate fuel adoption gained further ground - CNG vehicles accounted for 22.62% of PV retail, while EV penetration climbed to 5.77%, both improving on year-ago levels.
Maruti Suzuki held pole position with 1,58,509 units, a 12.44% YoY gain and 36.01% market share - more than the next two OEMs combined. Tata Motors posted the sharpest growth among volume leaders, up 27.83% YoY to 57,688 units, retaining second place ahead of Mahindra's 55,236 units (+7.10% YoY).
Hyundai reported 47,449 units (+4.97% YoY) and Toyota 27,006 units (+5.46%). Kia India posted 25,226 units, growing 12.78% YoY, reflecting steady demand across its SUV-heavy lineup.

JSW MG Motor posted 6,064 units (+14.76%) and Honda Cars 5,346 units (+5.71%). Renault and Nissan led mid-tier growth - Renault at 4,087 units (+42.40%), Nissan at 3,047 units (+59.20%).
