SK On And Nissan Establish Battery Supply Agreement To Boost Future Electric Vehicle Production In North America

SK On and Nissan have announced a significant battery supply agreement to enhance Nissan's electric vehicle (EV) production in North America. From 2028 to 2033, SK On will provide nearly 100GWh of high-performance batteries manufactured in the U.S. These batteries will power Nissan's next-generation EVs at their Canton, Mississippi plant. This partnership underscores both companies' dedication to electrification and sustainable mobility.

This collaboration is expected to create 1,700 jobs in the U.S. at SK On, with a total investment of $661 million, including equipment purchases. Additionally, Nissan has committed $500 million for EV production at the Canton Assembly Plant. "This agreement with SK On is a significant milestone for Nissan's electrification journey and supports further investment in U.S. manufacturing," stated Christian Meunier, chairman of Nissan Americas.

The partnership marks SK On's first agreement with a Japanese automaker, expanding its global customer base. SK On operates two battery plants in the U.S., with four more under construction alongside partners. Once operational, these facilities will boost SK On's annual U.S. production capacity beyond 180GWh. "This agreement underscores the strength of our battery technology and our growing presence in the North American market," said Seok-hee Lee, president and CEO of SK On.

Nissan is accelerating its EV strategy as part of its long-term vision. Last year, it announced plans to launch 30 new models over three years, including 16 electrified vehicles. New EVs from the Canton plant are set to debut in 2028, reinforcing Nissan's commitment to localized EV production and sustainability.

Nissan is dedicated to innovation and sustainable mobility by delivering vehicles that excite and inspire. With a strong focus on electrification, Nissan aims to shape future mobility through advanced technology and customer-centric design while reducing carbon emissions.

SK On was launched as an independent company in October 2021 after splitting from SK Innovation, South Korea's largest energy company. It merged with SK Trading International in November 2024 and SK Enterm in February 2025 to secure sustainable growth. Headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, SK On operates globally with battery plants across the United States, Europe, and Asia.

This collaboration between Nissan and SK On represents another step forward for the U.S. EV manufacturing ecosystem. It ensures customers benefit from advanced EV technology supported by a reliable domestic supply chain.
