Indian Car Retail Sales Grow Slightly In April 2025 - Mahindra Jumps To 2nd Place

April 2025 saw the Indian car retail market experience a modest year-over-year growth, with sales totaling 3,49,939 units, as highlighted by the Federation of Automotive Dealers Association (FADA). This represented a 1.55% increase from the 3,44,594 units sold in April 2024, marking an additional 5,345 units sold year-over-year. The automotive industry's sales dynamics offer insight into consumer preferences and the competitive landscape among automakers.

Maruti Suzuki, India's leading car manufacturer in terms of sales, sold 1,38,021 units in April 2025, commanding a 39.44% market share. Despite retaining its top position, the company experienced a slight decline of 0.83% in year-over-year sales, down from 1,39,173 units in the same month the previous year. This decrease in sales volume amounted to 1,152 units.

Following Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra Auto secured the second spot in sales, with 48,405 units sold and a 13.83% market share. This represented a notable 25.09% growth from the 38,696 units sold in April 2024, underscoring Mahindra's strength as a prominent SUV manufacturer in India. The brand's year-over-year growth of 9,709 units is a testament to its growing popularity among Indian consumers.

Tata and Hyundai closely contested for the third and fourth positions, with Tata selling 44,065 units and Hyundai closely behind at 43,642 units. Both brands saw a decline in year-over-year sales, with Tata experiencing a 6.07% drop and Hyundai an 11.37% decrease. This resulted in a loss of 2,850 units for Tata and 5,601 units for Hyundai, indicating shifting consumer preferences and market dynamics.

Toyota and Kia also reported close sales figures, ranking fifth and sixth, respectively. Toyota's sales stood at 23,344 units, marking a 15.70% growth, while Kia sold 21,618 units, achieving a 9.15% increase in sales volume. Skoda Auto Volkswagen, following the launch of the Kylaq, recorded a significant 39.48% growth in year-over-year sales, reaching 9,458 units. JSW MG Motor and Honda also made the list, with JSW MG Motor registering a 14.16% growth by selling 4,871 units and Honda experiencing a 22.70% decline with 4,833 units sold. These figures illustrate the varying fortunes of car manufacturers in the competitive Indian market.

In the luxury segment, Mercedes-Benz maintained its position as India's top-selling luxury brand, despite a 18.63% drop in year-over-year sales, totaling 1,323 units. BMW followed closely behind with 1,234 units sold, witnessing a modest 2.91% decrease in sales. The luxury car market demonstrates the resilience and continued appeal of premium brands amidst market fluctuations.

BYD notably outperformed Jeep in retail sales, showcasing the changing landscape of the Indian automotive market. Additionally, brands like Renault, Nissan, and Volvo faced declines in sales, reflecting broader market challenges and consumer shifts. On the other hand, brands such as Force and JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) saw growth, indicating areas of opportunity within the market.
