South Korean carmaker Hyundai will recreate its 1974 Pony Coupe with the help of concept car's designer Giorgetto Giugiaro.
South Korean carmaker Hyundai will recreate its 1974 Pony Coupe with the help of concept car's designer Giorgetto Giugiaro.
The 1974 Pony Coupe was showcased to promote Hyundai as a standalone manufacturer of cars. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the concept car was showcased at the 1974 Turin Auto Show but was never put into production.
Hyundai announced the decision to recreate the iconic Pony car during a Design Talk in Seoul. The South Korean firm will be working with Italian design firm GFG Design which was founded in 2015 by the Pony Coupe's original designer Giorgetto Giugiaro and his son Fabrizio Giugiaro. Giorgetto and Fabrizio founded GFG Design after the older designer quit Italdesign Giugiaro post its purchase by the Volkswagen Group in 2015.
The original Pony Coupe no longer exists so the new Hyundai Pony Coupe will be built from scratch. Hyundai has confirmed that the rebuilt Pony Coupe Concept will be showcased in the spring of 2023.
The Pony Coupe never found its way onto the roads as a production vehicle despite the Pony Coupe project running till 1981. Hyundai originally intended to introduce the Pony Coupe to the European and American markets but just before it could enter mass production, the project was shelved due to adverse economic conditions in 1981.
Hyundai however, ended up using the Pony name for its first-ever series of four-door sedans as an independent carmaker that ran from 1975 to 1990 with designs that were somewhat inspired by Pony Coupe.
The Pony Coupe's wedge-shaped design made its way onto later cars designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. It is the Pony car that is said to have inspired the iconic 1983 DMC Delorean which was also penned by Giugiaro and was the real star of the Back to the Future movies.
In recent times, Hyundai has turned back to the Pony coupe for inspiration and this has resulted in electric marvels like the Hyundai N Vision 74 Hydrogen concept and the Ionic 5 crossover EV.
Thoughts About The Hyundai Pony Coupe
Hyundai's decision to recreate the iconic 1974 Pony Coupe Concept with the help of its original designer shows that the design juices are really flowing in Seoul. While this is just plain speculation from us, it may also hint that Hyundai is to bring the N Vision 74 concept into production sometime in the near future.
