Ford Ikon

Ford Ikon was the American brand's India specific model based on the fourth-generation Ford Fiesta hatchback. It was launched in 1999 and was one of the best cars money can buy in India.

Though the driving dynamics were outstanding, the initial models came with a 1.3-litre petrol engine with just 68bhp. Though this was plenty at that time, the Japanese companies started setting the bar higher with power outputs around 100hp.

This prompted Ford to up its game and introduce a more powerful 1.6-litre engine with 91bhp. This engine is the sole reason why Ford fans call the Ikon 'Josh Machine'.

There were other engine options also such as the mediocre 1.8-litre diesel engine that was introduced in 2003. However, this engine was replaced by a more modern 1.4-litre DuraTorq diesel engine until the end of its production in 2011.

Ford Fusion

Ford Fusion is one of the few vehicles that lived up to its name. It was a combination of many but it never had an identity crisis since it executed everything well.

If Ford had introduced the Fusion 5 years ago, it would have competed against Maruti Suzuki S-Cross and Hyundai Creta.

Unfortunately for Ford, it was a car that was well ahead of its time and found few takers.
However, for the people who bought the Ford Fusion, it was difficult to find a replacement car since the Fusion was too good to be replaced.

It was launched in 2006 and came with a 1.6-litre petrol engine. Sadly, for Ford India, it was launched at a time when the petrol prices were rising steeply, but Ford refused to kill it and added the frugal 1.4-litre diesel engine from the Fiesta.

Even though this helped pick up the pace, in the end, it was too late for a successful and the market had moved on to new launches.

Ford Fiesta

Ford Fiesta was introduced in 2005 in India, and it gave Ford a new breath of life in the country by becoming a default choice for many buyers.

However, it was not creative ads or marketing that helped the Fiesta in India but the 'word-of-mouth' from existing users.

As mentioned earlier, the petrol prices in India was going up and the new Ford Fiesta with its 1.4-litre DuraTorq diesel engine was able to travel further than any other car with a certain amount of fuel.

Along with this outstanding fuel efficiency, it delivered excellent comfort, a spacious cabin, stylish interiors without losing its driver pleasing handling abilities.

Ford Figo

If Maruti Suzuki hadn't launched the Swift with the Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre diesel engine in India, this would have been the car that would have filled in that space.

The only area the Maruti Suzuki Swift was better than Ford Figo was the engine; The Fiat-sourced 1.3 DDIS engine was noticeably more powerful than the 1.4-litre DuraTorq engine in the Figo.

Even though Ford Figo put up a good fight with Maruti Suzuki Swift, the lack of updates and popularity of Maruti Suzuki as a brand had better of the Ford Figo as time went by.

Ford Endeavour

If you saw this one on the road, it is difficult to forget it. This SUV from Ford to India was more like a short teaser video for the American SUVs. It was not only big and brawny but dwarfed anything other than heavy vehicles and buses.

People bought this SUV for its looks alone and nothing else mattered to them. Along with this, the vehicle was offered in both 4x2 and 4x4 variants.

However, the 4x4 version had a more powerful 3.0-litre diesel engine with an automatic gearbox.

This engine produced 154bhp and 380Nm of torque. Whereas the less powerful 2.5-litre diesel engine produces 143bhp and 440Nm of torque.
