30 Percent Of Motorists In India Use Fake Driving Licenses — New MV Act To Counter It

Around 30 percent of driving licenses in India are fake according to the minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari. He said this in the parliament while making a pitch for the proposed Motor Vehicles Amendment bill.

According to Gadkari, the easy process to get a license and all the fake licenses are the root cause for the number of accidents in India. Nitin Gadkari quite rightly said that it is the easiest to get a driving license in India and in most cases, the photograph of the license holder does not match the picture in the license, and there are several errors in driving licenses.

Under the leadership of Gadkari, the Department of Road Transport and Highways has proposed a new bill that increases fines for traffic violations by nearly ten times. Driving without a valid driving license will attract a fine of Rs 5,000 instead of the current Rs 500.

The fine for driving under the influence of Alcohol will go up to Rs 10,000 from the current Rs 2,000. Rash and dangerous driving will attract a fine of Rs 5,000 instead of Rs 1,000. The Department of Road Transport and Highways feels this is necessary in order to make Indian roads safer.

In context to this bill, Gadkari mentioned the fact about fake licenses. It is an irrefutable fact that was quoted by the minister. India is a large country, with a large population. The number of people who drive without a driving license are way too many to account for, as our country does not have a lot of people in its police forces.

The number of people that violate the rules who have been accounted for are also way too many and this is not a good sign at all. Because of this, Indian roads have become some of the most dangerous in the world and the ministry is not happy about this.

Nitin Gadkari said that he has been trying for years to get this legislation approved. The cabinet has approved the amendment bill, but it now needs approval from the lower and upper houses of the parliament.

Once the new rules are approved, every offence will attract steep fines and this could make motorists drive safer. However, this really depends on how strictly the rules are enforced by the local police.

Thoughts On Fake Driving Licenses Are Used By 30 Percent Of Motorists In India

Several developed countries rely on steep and hefty fines to discipline motorists. It was only recently that Dubai asked its citizens to keep their cars clean, or they would be fined heavily. The USA, UK, Canada, Dubai and a few other European countries rely on fining motorists heavily for violations.

Nitin Gadkari and his ministry is trying to implement the same in India This new bill could either be a landmark in India or it could lead to more bribery which is what people will resort to. Indians will definitely choose to get away with the violation by bribing the policeman with Rs 500 instead of paying the fine of Rs 5,000. We sure hope this does not happen and we learn to adhere to the rules.
