Formula One: Mercedes Cockpit Protection Concept
oi-Rajkamal
By Rajkamal
The closed cockpit idea for Formula One drivers is back after Justin Wilson's fatal accident in IndyCar a week ago. The FIA, the governing body for Formula One is looking at ideas to make the sport safer.
A closed cockpit design had a couple of major concerns like debris impacting the canopy can rebound high into the air, presenting a safety risk to other cars and spectators, and accessing an injured driver in the event of an accident could prove highly difficult.
On the same concern, Mercedes-Benz has come up with a closed cockpit design concept that could save the lives of drivers.
The video below shows how Mercedes has designed the cockpit canopy, which can avoid debris to an extent and which also lets the driver have full view.
