The police in India's financial capital Mumbai have made helmets mandatory for pillion riders. Those found flouting the rules will be fined Rs 500 and will have their driving license will be suspended for 3 months.

The new crackdown which will start in 15 days time. Currently, the police only fine the rider Rs 500 and suspend their licenses. In 15 days time, the same fine and suspension will affect pillion riders riding without a helmet in the city of Mumbai.

Recently, the Indian Government had updated the 1998 Motor Vehicles Act with regards to the wearing of helmets. As per the updated laws, the police can impose instant fines of up to Rs 2,000 on riders. These fines comprise of a Rs 1,000 for wearing a helmet without a genuine BIS certification. Riders can also be fined another Rs 1,000 if they are wearing a helmet unbuckled.

The new Mumbai Police notification comes two days after the cops in another of India's metropolitan cities, Chennai decided to crack down on helmetless pillion riders. The Chennai Police on Monday, had informed citizens that it would once again be keeping an eye out for helmetless pillion riders after not strictly imposing the rule due to the Covid-19 pandemic which swept through the country in the past two years.

The new notice from the Mumbai Police also comes just three days after a concerned citizen reported a group of six people riding a scooter in the Andheri West area of Mumbai. The video of the incident shows six riders on the scooter with one of them sitting atop the shoulders of one of the other riders.

While incidents of overloaded two-wheelers like this are quite common across India, the incident in Mumbai was one of the most extreme we have seen for quite a while now.

The incident shows just how crazy the regular Indian can be while on the road, putting not only their own life but the lives of five others in danger. Whatever may be the reason provided, we don't really think it is worth putting the lives of so many people in danger.
