The 160cc motorcycle segment has always been a pretty lucrative market for two-wheeler manufacturers and it also gives the manufacturers an opportunity to showcase their performance superiority over their competitors.
In addition to that, the 160cc segment motorcycle has been tricky to perfect as it should offer a perfect balance between daily commute and decent performance. So, Bajaj's plans to have two products in the same segment with slightly different 'flavour' seems to be justifiable. So the question is which one is the better pick for you?
In this comparison, we shall look at four parameters; Design, Features, Powertrain, Chassis & Brakes, and Price.
The design is a very subjective matter, and what may look good for me may not be acceptable in others' books. However, both the Bajaj Pulsar NS160 and Bajaj Pulsar N160 are designed to grab the attention of youngsters.
Starting with the newest motorcycle, the Bajaj Pulsar N160 looks pretty similar to the Pulsar N250 and the overall design looks much fresher to the eyes compared to the Pulsar NS range of motorcycles. Moreover, the use of projector headlamps makes the motorcycle look quite sinister.
On the other hand, the Bajaj Pulsar NS160 overall looks very sporty with its bold graphics and its perimeter frame. However, bits such as the halogen headlamps and the instrument cluster looks dated and reveals the age of the design.
As mentioned above, customers with different priorities approach the 160cc segment, and this is very difficult as the manufacturer also has to price the motorcycle quite competitively. In addition to this, the 160cc motorcycle must offer decent feature list as well without breaking the bank account.
The newer Bajaj Pulsar N160 has this category licked, by offering dual-channel ABS (optional) in this segment. While this may seem like a minor feature to many new riders, this feature in reality can be life-saving in a number of riding conditions - Especially when the roads are wet.
Other notable features in the Bajaj Pulsar N160 include underbelly exhaust, LED projector headlamps, split seats, gear position indicator, clock, fuel economy meter and distance-to-empty read-out.
On the other hand, Bajaj has given all the necessary features and equipment such as a part digital instrument display, rear disc brake, single-channel ABS and a few more goodies, the age of the motorcycle is clearly visible with its halogen headlamps.
Chassis & Brakes
The Bajaj N160 sports a larger 300mm front disc on the dual-channel ABS variant, whereas the single-channel ABS variant comes with a smaller 280mm front disc brake. The rear disc on both variants measures an identical 230mm.
However, the brakes on the Bajaj Pulsar NS160 is smaller as the front disc brake measure 260mm and the rear disc measures 230mm.
In terms of chassis, the Bajaj Pulsar NS160 claws back the lost ground with its sophisticated and stiffer perimeter frame chassis.
Powertrain plays a significant role in the 160cc segment and that is one of the major reasons why people are spending extra money compared to a 150cc motorcycle
The Bajaj Pulsar N160 in this comparison is slightly on the back foot as It produces 15.7bhp of peak power and 14.6Nm of peak torque from its 2-valve engine. Moreover, it is also slightly heavier at 154kg. Gearbox continues to be a 5-speed unit.
On the other hand, the Bajaj Pulsar NS160 produces a lot more power from its 160.3cc, 4-valve engine at 17bhp and 14.6Nm of peak torque. Moreover, the motorcycle is also lighter weighing at just 151kg.
In India, pricing plays a crucial role in the buying decision of many people, irrespective of the product and at Rs 1.23 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) the Bajaj Pulsar NS160 dual-disc variant is priced similar to the entry-level Bajaj Pulsar N160, which is also priced at Rs 1.23 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). However, the Bajaj Pulsar N160 with dual-channel ABS costs Rs 1.28 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
Thoughts About Bajaj Pulsar NS160 & Bajaj Pulsar N160
Both Pulsars have traded punches and it seems that the Bajaj Pulsar N160 comes out a bit better thanks to its optional dual-channel ABS, better braking hardware and longer feature list.
