The Yamaha YZF-series of motorcycles are among the best supersport motorcycles in the world. Starting right from the little 125cc YZF-R125 and slightly bigger YZF-R15, the range increases in capacity and capability with the YZF-R3 and goes all the way to the flagship YZF-R1.

Until 2020, Yamaha sold the YZF-R6 in a few countries. However, it had to be discontinued owing to stringent Euro 5 emissions norms. The Yamaha R6 is a revered motorcycle powered by a high-revving four-cylinder engine. The older generations were aural masterpieces and could even keep up with the litre-class motorcycles.

Yamaha ended production of the R6 and continued to make the motorcycle in limited numbers for track use. Soon after production of the Yamaha R6 stopped, rumours of a replacement started going around. Yamaha recently trademarked the YZF-R7 name and confirmed what the rumours have been saying all along - The Yamaha R6 will be replaced by the R7.

Here's something not many might know. This is not the first time Yamaha has manufactured the R7. Back in 1999, Yamaha manufactured a limited-edition motorcycle called the YZF-R7. Only 500 units were produced and it was basically sold to the public only because Yamaha needed to homologate it.

In essence, it was a race motorcycle for the road. It was designed to compete in the Superbike World Championship and the Suzuka 8 Hours endurance race. It was powered by a 749cc, inline-four-cylinder engine with a maximum power output of around 106bhp. The one equipped with the race kit produced around 135bhp.

Safe to say, the new upcoming Yamaha YZF-R7 won't be so extreme. It is in-fact based on the same platform as the Yamaha MT-07 street bike and is powered by the same engine too. However, Yamaha will make several changes to the motorcycle because the R7 is a very important motorcycle for Yamaha.

The Yamaha YZF-R7 will be powered by the liquid-cooled, 689cc, parallel-twin engine that also powers the Yamaha MT-07. In the MT-07, it has a maximum power output of 73.4bhp and a peak torque output of 67Nm. In the R7 though, we expect Yamaha to have reworked the engine internals in order to extract more power.

From the leaked images, it looks like Yamaha seems to have developed the motorcycle from the ground up. The similarities between the R7 and the MT-07 are likely to end at just the engine. In terms of design, it features sharp design lines that make it look aggressive.

Up front is an LED projector headlamp positioned inside the ram air intake with LED DRLs positioned in a large fairing. The side fairing is unique in its design, because it exposes some bits of the engine which only adds to the lovely design. It gets an underslung exhaust that juts out only slightly to the side. The rear-end is minimalistic with sharp edges.

The riding position is aggressive and the image in which the motorcycle is seen cornering, shows it will be a brilliant ride on the twisties. It is one of the best-looking motorcycles in Yamaha's lineup.

The Yamaha YZF-R7 will compete directly with the Aprilia RS660. The Aprilia gets an output of 100bhp and we expect Yamaha to get the power output to roughly the same figure. The exact specs and features of the upcoming motorcycle are not known at the moment, but we do know that it will come with the best in terms of electronics and riding aids.

The Yamaha YZF-R7 will be revealed on 18 May, 2021.
