Yamaha MT-15 With Dual-Channel ABS To Be Launched Soon; Prices Set To Increase Again
The Yamaha MT-15 is all set to finally receive a dual-channel ABS in the coming weeks. Media reports claim that Yamaha will equip the MT-15 with the much-needed dual-channel ABS feature soon. This will certainly make the bike more desirable, but will also increase the price of the motorcycle.
The Yamaha MT-15 was launched in the Indian market back in 2019. It is basically the naked/streetfighter version of the Yamaha YZF-R15. It is powered by the same engine, based on the same chassis and has similar power output figures as well. There are a few differences though.
The sprockets are shorter which makes the MT-15 a hoot to ride on the road. Other differences include a single-channel ABS instead of the dual-channel unit in the R15, and a steel box-type swingarm instead of the aluminium underslung unit of the R15. Thanks to these differences, the MT-15 was priced a little lower than its faired sibling.
However, it did not find lots of takers in the market as buyers still felt it was overpriced for the number of features on offer. Yamaha seems to have listened to buyers' sentiments and will soon equip the motorcycle with dual-channel ABS. Rather than launching it as a new motorcycle, Yamaha might choose to add the dual-channel ABS-equipped motorcycle as another variant.
This way, those looking for more features still get their perfect motorcycle and those looking for a less expensive variant also have a choice. Yamaha won't be making any other mechanical changes to the motorcycle.
It will still be powered by the same liquid-cooled, 155cc, single-cylinder engine with a maximum power output of 18.4bhp and a peak torque output of 14.1Nm. A 6-speed gearbox drives the rear wheel via an assist and slipper clutch. Braking duties are handled by a single disc brake at both ends while suspension is taken care of by a telescopic fork up front and a monoshock at the rear.
In the Indian market, the Yamaha MT-15 is available in four colour options - Dark Matte Blue, Metallic Black, Ice Fluo Vermilion, and Customise. Yamaha had recently hiked prices of the MT-15 by Rs 1,000. It is now priced between Rs 1,40,900 and Rs 1,44,900 depending on the colour opted for. We expect the dual-channel ABS variant to cost Rs 2,000 more than the single-channel ABS variant.
Thoughts On Yamaha MT-15 Being Launched With Dual-Channel ABS
The Yamaha MT-15 is one of the most fun-to-ride motorcycles in the 150cc segment in India. It feels peppy and active, and can be thrown around tight bends without thinking twice. The single-channel ABS allowed enthusiasts to slide the rear around as and when required by locking up the rear brakes, and this was quite a fun thing to do.
With the addition of the dual-channel ABS system, it becomes safer and more desirable. Along with this, the motorcycle's ex-showroom price too will surely go up. Will it actually help Yamaha in terms of sales numbers? We will just have to wait and watch.
