Ola S1 & S1 Pro Second Purchase Window Pushed Back To Dec 16
Bangalore based EV manufacturer Ola Electric has delayed the second purchase window for its S1 & S1 Pro e-scooters to December 16. In a message to customers, the company cited the unprecedented demand created by the first purchase window as the reason for the delay.
Ola had earlier stated that it would be opening the second purchase window for those who had who wanted to confirm their bookings on November 1.
After the first purchase window closed in September, the confirmed order list for the two Ola electric scooters had gone past the 1 lakh unit mark. Expected delivery timetables for the Ola S1 and S1 Pro confirmed during the initial purchase window are now said to be stretching into the first quarter of 2022. This is the reason that Ola decided to push back the opening of the second purchase window by 45 days.
Ola also recently updated the lucky customers that did manage to confirm their bookings in the first purchase window after paying Rs 20,000. The company has stated that customers will be able to test ride the scooters come November 10th before they pay the remaining amount to make the electric scooter their own. However, as we mentioned earlier, delivery timelines for some of these customers are stretching into the early parts of 2022.
The S1 and S1 Pro are the first-ever scooters from Ola Electric, which was created in 2017 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Ola Cabs. However, Ola Electric was spun off from its parent company in March 2019. In July of the same year, Ola Electric become one of India's Unicorn startups after raising $250 million from SoftBank in its Series B funding round.
Last year in May, Ola Electric purchased Amsterdam-based EV startup Etergo. Ola Electric is currently valued at $3 billion after a recent round of funding in September that raised $200 million for the company.
The Ola Electric S1 and S1 Pro were launched on 15th August (Indian Independence Day), 2021 and were priced at Rs 1 lakh and 1.3 lakh respectively. Both the S1 and S1 Pro an interior permanent magnet type (IPM) mid-drive motor which has a peak output of 11.39bhp and 58Nm of torque. The Ola S1 sports a 2.98kWh lithium-ion battery pack that gives it a claimed range of 121 kilometres. The S1 Pro's battery pack is rated at 3.97kWh which gives the e-scooter a range of 181 kilometres on a single charge.
Both the S1 and S1 Pro support fast charging through Ola Electric's hypercharger network, which was recently initialised with the addition of the first charger at the company's Ola campus facility in Bangalore. Ola claims that when connected to a hypercharger the S1 and S1 Pro will recover 75 kilometres of range in just 18 minutes.
When plugged into a regular wall socket, the charging times go up exponentially with the S1 requiring four hours and forty-eight minutes for a full charge and the S1 Pro bringing that figure to a painstaking six and a half hours.
Thoughts On The Delay To The Ola Second Purchase Window
The delay in the opening of the second purchase window for the Ola Electric S1 and S1 Pro shows just how much the demand for a hyped up electric vehicle can be in India. Only by ramping up production exponentially can Ola manage to ensure supply meets demand levels for the S1 and S1 Pro. For now, all the public can do is hope and pray that another delay does not emerge from the shadows.
