2022 Yamaha YZF-R7 Globally Unveiled: New Japanese Middle-Weight Supersport Replaces The R6

The YZF-R7 is offered in two colour schemes: Team Yamaha Blue and Performance Black. The new Supersport motorcycle retails at USD 8,999. Depending on the current exchange rates, it converts to roughly around Rs 6.60 lakh ex-showroom before taxes.

The 2022 Yamaha YZF-R7 is powered by the same engine as its naked sibling, the MT-07. It is a 689cc liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, DOHC inline twin-cylinder engine that produces a maximum of 72.3bhp at 8,750rpm and a peak torque of 67Nm at 6,500rpm.

The engine comes mated to a six-speed gearbox with a slip-assisted clutch. The engine features the brand CP2 crossplane engine technology. The engine features forged aluminium pistons with direct-plated cylinders for lighter weight and excellent strength at higher temperatures.

The crossplane engine also features a 270-degree crank and uneven firing order to provide a linear power delivery and a distinctive exhaust note. Additionally, the R7 has an optimized secondary gear ratio for a more sporty feel.

The 2022 Yamaha R7 uses a narrow steel frame that has resulted in the slimmest bodywork found in Yamaha's Supersport lineup. This makes the motorcycle more aerodynamic and stable at high speeds.

The R7's design is in line with the other R-Series motorcycles in the brand's line-up. It features a central air intake which also houses the LED headlamps inside. The air intake is flanked on either side by the Y-shaped LED DRLs.

The side fairing of the motorcycle features large outlets to help dissipate hot air from the engine. It also features LED taillamps with cutouts to improve the aerodynamic design of the motorcycle.

Other features include a windscreen, clip-on handlebars, 13-litre sculpted fuel tank and rear-set footpegs making for a committed riding position.

Suspension duties on the YZF-R7 are handled by a fully adjustable 41mm KYB USD fork at the front and a link-type mono-shock at the rear. The company has also altered the geometry of the chassis to improve the handling of the Supersport motorcycle. It now features a 5mm shorter wheelbase than the MT-07.

Braking on the motorcycle is done via dual 298mm discs brakes with a radially mounted four-pot calliper at the front and a single 245mm disc brake at the rear. The motorcycle sits on 17-inch alloy wheels with Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S22F E 120/70ZR17 section tyre at the front and 180/55ZR17 section tyre at the rear.

The YZF-R7 features a digital TFT display that provides a host of information to the rider. The new switchgear placed on the handlebar can be used to navigate through various functions on the display.

The electronic rider aids on the new Yamaha YZF-R7 is limited to just a dual-channel ABS. The company is also providing an optional one-way quick-shifter (Up). No other rider aids such as traction control or cruise control are on offer.

The growing popularity of performance motorcycles in India might force the company to launch the YZF-R7 in the Indian market at a later date. If launched, the Yamaha R7 will rival the also upcoming Aprilia RS660 in India.
