BMW Motorrad Patents Predictive Traction Control: New Strides In Motorcycle Safety
BMW Motorrad has patented a predictive traction control system for its motorcycles. It makes use of multiple cameras combined with an electronic control unit. Together, these systems continuously monitor the road ahead and prepare the traction control unit for what is to come. This could be the new norm of safety for high-end motorcycles in the years to come.
BMW Motorrad is one of the best motorcycle manufacturers in the world. The brand makes some of the most advanced and most exquisite motorcycles in the world. Some of its motorcycles like the BMW S1000RR come with an advanced electronics suite with features like six-axis IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), traction control, riding modes etc.
All of these features are interlinked to each other. The IMU continuously monitors the lean angle of the motorcycle as well as the acceleration and braking. This data is then used to monitor and control the traction control systems, ABS, etc according to the riding mode selected.
The current systems used on these motorcycles are advanced and are simply the best of motorcycle electronics on sale today. However, BMW seems to have been silently at work, further developing its motorcycle tech. BMW Motorrad has now patented predictive traction control.
The system makes use of multiple cameras to scan the road surface ahead of the motorcycle and this is then fed into a control unit. The control unit which is the brain of the system then turns the imagery into a real-time 3D image of the road surface. This allows the system to prepare the traction control system for what is to come.
The logic of how this system works is pretty simple, but there are some advanced electronics at work here. The advantages of this patented system are plentiful. Current systems are passive in nature and traction control gets activated only after wheel slip is detected. The predictive traction control system is active in nature, with the system getting activated just before the wheel slips.
Thoughts On BMW Predictive Traction Control System Being Patented
The motorcycles of the future will come with multiple cameras and some will even come with radar and maybe even lidar. This will enable active cruise control, active blind-spot monitoring, and of course technologies like this traction control system. We feel this predictive traction control system can give birth to more active safety systems like predictive ABS.
