Bajaj Trademarks Freerider Name — Upcoming Electric Motorcycles In India
Bajaj has filed for a new trademark. The trademark application is filed for the name 'Freerider' under Class 12. This class includes different types of automobiles and includes electric vehicles also. This, along with the existence of KTM's electric bike, Freerider E-XC leads to speculation that this trademark name could be used for Bajaj's first electric motorcycle.
From the speculations, it is more likely that Bajaj will use the same platform as the Husqvarna E-Pilen for the Freerider. The E-Pilen concept was revealed earlier this year and we expect Bajaj to start production later this year in order to prepare for a grand launch during the end of 2021 or at the start of 2022.
Even though it is too early to say anything about the design of the Freerider, we expect the Freerider to sport a sharp design language to differentiate it from the Husqvarna E-Pilen. We also expect Bajaj to replace the more sophisticated equipment like USD-forks and aluminium swingarm from the E-Pilen with more conventional forks and a box-section swingarm to reduce the production cost.
However, it is safe to assume that Bajaj will use the same powertrain from the E-Pilen concept. It is an 8kW (10.73 bhp) electric motor and is good for 100kms on a single charge. The bike will also make use of battery-swapping technology to help range-anxious buyers.
We expect Bajaj to roll out the Freerider sooner than expected as the Indian manufacturer has been developing a common electric platform with KTM for some time now. We expect this partnership to spawn multiple electric motorcycles ranging from 3kW to 10kW and it will use a 48v electric system.
Likewise, KTM and Husqvarna will make use of Bajaj's Chetak platform to bring out their own respective electric scooters.
Thoughts On Bajaj Freerider Electric Motorcycle Being Trademarked
Given the electric architecture, the Freerider will be priced at a slight premium. However, it can also be a turning point for Bajaj and its customers. Bajaj seems to be leading the way forward when it comes to the development of future-ready motorcycles and scooters.
