Best Scooter Launches In India In 2020: Here’s Our Top-Five Pick Along With A Few Special Mentions
The year 2020 is finally coming to a close. While the first half of the year proved disastrous for the Indian auto industry, it slowly managed to recover back in the second half. The two-wheeler industry witnessed an increasing demand for new models in the second half as more people preferred private modes of transport over public ones.
The highlight for the scooter segment, however, was in the first couple of months. The arrival of the sixth-generation iteration of India's best-selling scooter, along with a few major OEMs joining the EV segment, became the talk-of-the-town.
The importance of the first two months is explained via our top-five list. Four out of our five models on the list were introduced between January and February. Having said that, here is our top-5 pick of scooters launched in India in 2020.
Honda Activa 6G
The Honda Activa is a household name, which has been on sale in India now for close to 20-years. Over the years, the scooter has undergone six-generation changes but has managed to still retain its ‘best-selling scooter' title in the Indian market.
The latest generation of the scooter called the Activa 6G was introduced with a number of subtle updates and revisions. It also now comes with a number of new features and equipment, all while retaining a similar design to its previous generation models.
The Honda Activa 6G is offered with a price tag of Rs 67,392, ex-showroom (Delhi). It comes powered by the same 110cc engine which is now BS6-compliant and produces 7.6bhp and 8.8Nm of peak torque.
TVS iQube Electric
The TVS iQube is the first fully-electric scooter offering from the brand in the Indian market. The new electric scooter from the Hosur-based manufacturer is priced at Rs 1.15 lakh, ex-showroom (Bengaluru) and is positioned in the premium electric scooter segment.
The electric scooter is currently available only in Bengaluru at the moment. It comes powered by a 2.25kWh lithium-ion battery pack paired with a 4.4kW electric motor. The electric powertrain offers a range of 80km on a single charge, along with a top speed of 80km/h.
Bajaj Chetak Electric
Another major OEM to enter the electric scooter segment is Bajaj Auto, with their Chetak electric offering. Bajaj has brought back the Chetak nameplate after more than a decade.
The Bajaj Chetak electric is also currently available in Bengaluru and Pune. The electric scooter is available in two variants and is offered with a starting price of Rs 1 lakh, ex-showroom (Bengaluru).
The Bajaj Chetak electric scooter comes with a 4kW electric motor mated to a lithium-ion battery pack. It offers a maximum range of 95km on a single charge while having a top speed of 65km/h. Similar to its rivals, the Bajaj Chetak electric takes roughly 4 hours for a complete charge.
Ather 450X
The Ather 450X is the latest model from the Bengaluru-based premium e-scooter startup. The Ather 450X was initially available in Bengaluru and Chennai. However, over the course of the year, Ather has expanded their presence in over 11 cities, with more expansion planned in the coming year.
The Ather 450X is one of the best-performing premium electric scooters in the Indian market. The electric scooter boasts of excellent build quality, performance, range and convenience. The Ather 450X is priced at Rs 1.27 lakh, ex-showroom (Bengaluru).
Vespa Racing Sixties
The Vespa Racing Sixties is a limited edition model introduced in the Indian market earlier this year. The Racing Sixties version is based on the brand's SXL 125 and SX 150 models and features special racing livery, inspired by the brand's heritage from the 1960s.
The Vespa Racing Sixties is priced slightly higher than its standard versions and is offered with a price tag starting at Rs 1.20 lakh, ex-showroom (Delhi). Apart from the cosmetic updates, the Racing Sixties models remain identical to the standard scooter.
Special Mentions
Yamaha Ray-ZR 125
The Yamaha Ray-ZR scooter has been on sale in India for a while now. However, the Japanese brand recently updated the scooter replacing the old 113cc engine with a more powerful 125cc unit. The new Yamaha Ray-Zr 125 now comes with a price tag of Rs 74,330, ex-showroom (Delhi).
The new Yamaha Ray-ZR 125 is now powered by a 124cc engine producing 8bhp and 9.7Nm of peak torque. The scooter is said to tip the scale at just 99 kilograms, making it the lightest offering in the segment as well.
Aprilia SXR 160
The Aprilia SXR 160 hasn't been launched in the Indian market yet, however, bookings for the same have officially begun. The SXR 160 maxi-scooter is also expected to go on sale before the end of the year and hence mentioned in the list.
The Aprilia SXR 160 maxi-scooter is powered by a 160cc engine said to produce 10.5bhp and 11.6Nm of peak torque. Prices for the maxi-scooter will be announced at the time of launch.
