Royal Enfield Electric Motorcycles Currently Under Early Prototype Stages: Here Are The Details

Royal Enfield is said to be working on an electric bike for the Indian market. The new Royal Enfield electric motorcycle is currently in its very early stages of development. According to MoneyControl, the company is said to have set up a dedicated team to look into the brand's entry in the Indian EV segment.

According to reports, Royal Enfield is still said to be evaluating the segment under which an electric bike can be introduced. The company is said to have developed a few prototypes of possible future electric motorcycles as well.

Speaking to MoneyControl, Vinod Dasari, CEO, Royal Enfield stated:

"Electric is something we have been thinking about for quite some time. We are trying to figure out exactly which segment is the right segment for us. Electric is something we take very seriously."

He further added, "It is not about whether electric (mobility) will come or not but it's a question of ‘when'. We did make some prototypes, we have looked at several segments and we will be adding to the team in the near future."

Currently, there are no mainstream two-wheeler manufacturers who have introduced electric motorcycles in the Indian market. These include the likes of Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto, HMSI and TVS Motor Company. However, Bajaj and TVS have introduced electric scooters in the market, with the Chetak and iQube electric, respectively.

Currently, the electric motorcycle segment is filled by products from various start-ups, such as Ultraviolette, Revolt Intellicorp, Tork Motors and Hero Electric. However, with the electric vehicle segment in India growing at a rapid pace, it is no surprise to see mainstream manufacturers, including Royal Enfield wanting to join in on the action.
