Rajiv Bajaj, Managing Director, Bajaj Auto Ltd., disagreed with the plea for extension of the deadline for BS4 vehicles registration in the country. The deadline for BS4 vehicles registration is set to April 1.

While speaking to Hindu Business Line, Bajaj Auto chief said Covid-19 should not be a reason to extend the BS-IV deadline. He said this "unjustly penalises those of us" who have complied with the law in "letter and spirit".

He further added, "It is the job of management to anticipate and plan for a contingency. If the deadline is April 1, you must plan. Defaulting companies must reimburse their dealers for redundant BS-IV stocks, if any, on April 1."

Manufacturers like Hero MotoCorp and Honda have asked the Supreme Court to move the BS-IV deadline to June 30 due to the lockdown caused by Covid-19 across the country. Both manufacturers have confirmed that the current situation has led to surplus BS-IV stocks with the dealers and seeks an extension to the deadline.

Rajiv Bajaj also expressed that to meet the deadlines their company had to plan and work hard and ensure no BS4 vehicles are pushed to the dealer starting after February. However, some manufacturers failed to do that and were still pushing BS4 vehicles to the dealer weeks away from the deadline. As a result, there is a huge pile-up of BS4 vehicles in the country.

The country had gone through a major emission norms transition from BS-III to BS-IV back in 2017. There was a similar scenario of piled up BS3 stock after the deadline. Similarly, all the manufacturers had to sell their stocks at the last minute and incurred some serious loss due to heavy discounts offered.

Well, the companies should have planned better to phase out their vehicles. However, the major reason for the pile-up of unsold BS4 vehicles is due to the auto slowdown which started last year. The current lockdown added to the pile-up of clearing the BS4 stocks in our country. In a way Mr Bajaj is right in saying, the companies and dealers should have predicted better. But, in the current situation, it will be a blessing for dealers if the deadline is extended by the government.
