According to Autocar India, the new ECE helmet safety standards will feature improved testing procedures to offer more protection. The ECE 22-06 norms are changing the way impact tests are being carried out. The materials used for the construction of the helmet will be studied and changed accordingly as well.

The upcoming ECE standards will feature new testing procedures involving multiple impact tests at varying speeds as well as different impact points. According to the current ECE standards, the helmet is placed onto a head-form with built-in sensors and the whole thing is dropped onto a metal anvil from a set height.

The ECE 22-06 standards will also ensure the perfect balance between impact at higher and lower speeds. For a helmet to offer protection at high-speed impact, the shell had to be made stiffer. However, a stiffer shell can result in zero absorption of low-speed impacts which can affect the rider's safety. As a result, new regulations will focus on finding innovative ways to achieve balance.

The improved ECE standards will also focus on rotational forces acting on the rider's helmet during an impact as it can be dangerous if not reduced. The ECE 22-06 recognises that and has mandated that helmets will have to be dropped on an anvil at 45 degrees. The impact will be recorded by special sensors in the head which will provide data for twisting forces transmitted through the helmet to the rider's head.

The new regulation will also consider the factors affected by helmet visors as well. The ECE 22-06 regulations will improve the impact-test velocities, and the new regulations will also allow for darker tints. According to the current regulations, the helmet tints must allow at least 50 per cent transmission of light, but that number will be lowered to 35 per cent.

The new ECE 22-06 regulations standards were scheduled to be released by June 2020. However, the coronavirus pandemic could delay it and is expected to be introduced by December 2020. The prices will almost certainly go up, as manufacturers will have to make R&D and material investments to meet these norms.

The current ECE 22-05 regulations will remain legal for another three years. The ECE 22-05 helmet safety regulation was set up nearly two decades ago. The ECE has become one of the most widely followed safety standards across the globe. The ISI standards followed in India are based on the ECE structure. However, ISI still needs to improve a lot in terms of safety regulations followed.

Thoughts About The New ECE Helmet Safety Standards

The safety regulation bodies across the world are looking for different ways to protect the rider. The improved helmet safety regulations will help the rider to protect themselves in case of a collision. The tests for helmet protection have become more exhaustive and thorough thereby increasing the safety for the rider. The usage of carbon-composite fibre in the helmets will certainly help with improved protection.
