The BMW F 900 R and the BMW F 900 XR motorcycles will be launched in India on May 21, 2020. The company is looking to strengthen its middleweight motorcycle range by launching the F900 twins in the Indian market.

The BMW F 900 R is a naked middleweight roadster, while the BMW F 900 XR is a middleweight sport tourer. Both motorcycles are built on the same platform and share a whole lot of equipment including the engine as well. However, both the motorcycles are very different in terms of design and riding dynamics.

Speaking about the engine that is powering the F 900 twins, the motorcycles feature a 895cc engine, which is essentially a bored out version of the 853cc unit powering F 850 GS and the F 750 GS in the brand's portfolio. The 895cc, liquid-cooled, parallel-twin-cylinder engine produces a maximum power of 105bhp at 8,500 rpm, and a peak torque of 92 Nm at 6,500 rpm. The engine comes mated to a six-speed gearbox with slipper assist clutch.

Moving to the F 900 XR in particular, the motorcycle features twin-LED headlamps, tail lamps and turn indicators. It also features a TFT display with the brand's connected technology as standard. Other features include an adjustable hand brake and clutch levers, steering dampers, self-canceling turn indicators, a 12V charging socket, a steering damper and an adjustable windshield.

It also features a whole host of electronic rider aids, which includes (ASC) Automatic Stability Control, two different riding modes: Rain & Road, and an (ABS) Anti Lock Brake System. The F 900 XR adventure motorcycle dimension reads 2,160mm in length, 860mm in width, 1320mm in height, and features a rider seat height of 825mm. Once launched the BMW F 900 XR will rival the Ducati Multistrada and the Triumph Tiger 900 in the Indian market.

Moving to the F 900 R street-naked motorcycle, few features are shared between its adventure-tourer sibling. However, it does miss out on some features including a steering damper. The motorcycle features an aggressive and muscular look with its sculpted fuel tank and sharp looking headlights.

The F 900 R will be the first naked middle-weight from the brand in the country. Once launched, the F 900 R will rival the Ducati Monster 821, the Kawasaki Z900, and the KTM Duke 790 as well in the Indian market.

The suspension duties on both motorcycles are handled by a 43mm USD for at the front and a full-adjustable mono-shock setup at the rear. However, the suspension travel at both ends on the F 900 XR are more than the street-naked motorcycle. Braking is done via 320mm dual disc brakes with radially mounted calipers at the front, and a 265mm disc brake at the rear.

We expect BMW to price the F 900 R and F 900 XR at around Rs 11 lakh and Rs 12 lakh, when launched in the Indian market on May 21, respectively.

BMW is looking to bank on the growing popularity with the premium motorcycles in the Indian market. Adding to this, the adventure motorcycle has also seen a significant rise in demand.
