Bajaj’s Waluj Facility Employees To Get 50 Percent Salary For Lockdown Period: Conditions Apply
Pune based auto manufacturer, Bajaj Auto has informed employees at its Waluj facility that in order to claim half their salaries that it had promised to pay during the lockdown, they must have worked for two days before the lockdown started, and on 24 April, the day the facility resumed production.
A June 30th statement signed by Mr Anil Mohite, the Divisional Manager at Bajaj Auto stated that if the authorities called for a lockdown and the facility was forced to temporarily suspend operations, employees would get 50 percent of their wages during the lockdown.
A different letter dated 7 July said' "To be eligible for this 50% of salary or wages, employees need to be present on 8th and 9th of July 2020, as well as the first day post the lockdown."
In a separate statement, the Workers' Union said that Bajaj Auto had gone the extra mile and had assisted employees with medical and financial assistance and even by setting up a Covid centre.
The statement also said that there were no Covid-19 cases since operations resumed at the facility on 24 April and until 5 June. However positive cases have started increasing since.
Mr Thengade Bajirao, the President of the Workers' Union said, "We did contemplate a shutdown request (for 10 days) however we have come to realise that shutting a plant down won't serve any purpose so long as the cases continue to rise in the city."
The Administration at the Aurangabad district has announced a total lockdown between 10 and 18 June in order to contain the Covid-19 virus. As many as 400 employees have tested positive at the facility, with seven employees losing their lives to the disease.
Thoughts About Bajaj Auto's Statement About Salary Payouts During The Lockdown
We think this is a fair statement made by Bajaj Auto. There could be a few that call foul but the idea of having worked for two consecutive days before the lockdown was announced and working on the day operations resumed is just. There is a possibility that Bajaj may save a few lakh rupees with the payout.
