Bajaj-KTM Partnership Working On Electric Scooters: India Launch Expected Soon
Bajaj Auto & KTM are said to be working on introducing a number of electric-powered products in the portfolio very soon. These are said to include electric scooters, mopeds and motorised bicycles as well.
According to MoneyControl, the new products will be manufactured locally in India, with production set to begin at Bajaj's Chakan plant, Pune by 2022. The new products including the electric scooter are expected to be sold both in India and exported to international markets as well.
All the above mentioned new products from the Bajaj-KTM partnership will feature the same platform. The development project for the Powered Two-Wheeler (PTW) was started by Pierer Mobility Group (earlier KTM Industries) and Bajaj Auto. The project focuses on the development of electric vehicles in the power range of 3kW to 10kW.
The partnership between Bajaj and KTM began in 2007. Since then both companies have introduced a number of products in the Indian motorcycle segment. The Bajaj Pulsar 200NS was the first product from the partnership. The motorcycle borrowed its engine from the KTM Duke 200.
Currently, the partnership between Bajaj-KTM has allowed the Austrian brand to move the entire production of the Husqvarna models to Pune. The partnership has also allowed Bajaj to export their recently introduced Chetak electric to the European markets via KTM.
Apart from the low-voltage range of scooters and moped, the partnership between the two companies is also said to be working on high-power electric motorcycles. KTM already has two electric motorcycles in series production in Europe; the KTM SX-E5 and the Husqvarna EE 5.
Bajaj, on the other hand, has launched the Chetak electric scooter in the Indian market. The Bajaj Chetak electric is powered by a 4kW electric motor paired with a 3kWh lithium-ion battery. The motorcycle claims a maximum range of 95km and has a top speed of 65km/h.
Thoughts On The Bajaj-KTM Electric Scooter For India
The Bajaj-KTM electric portfolio has been in the works for quite a while now. KTM is evaluating all the factors for the introduction of its electric products in India. However, at this time, there is no confirmed timeline for the new products to be introduced in the Indian market.
