The Yamaha YZF R3 was unveiled at the 2018 Auto Expo, and has done fairly well for Yamaha. However, the good sales figures have declined recently and the Yamaha has not retailed a single unit during May 2019. The motorcycle competes with the Kawasaki Ninja 300 and the KTM RC390, both of which have registered decent sales over the last month.
While we do not know exact reasons for the decline in sales figures, we think it is because of pricing, and also perhaps potential buyers are waiting for the facelift verion to be launched. The Yamaha YZF-R3 facelift is already retailing in international markets. While the motorcycle has recieved some cosmetic and feature upgrades, the engine specs have remained the same.
The facelift Yamaha R3 features new dual LED headlamps, a revised fairing, and an aerodynamic design which reduces drag by seven percent, and boosts the top speed of the motorcycle by 8 kilometers per hour as compared to the outgoing model. The cycle also features new Metzeler radial tyres, 41mm Kayaba forks in the front, and a monoshock at the rear.
Braking is handled by a single 298mm disc in the front, and a 220mm disc set up at the rear. While the motorcycle has optional ABS in international markets, the YZF-R3 will be offered with ABS as standard in India.
The 2019 Yamaha YZF-R3 will see no change in engine specifications. It will continue to be powered by a 321cc, in line, twin cylinder engine the produces 40.8bhp power @ 10,750rpm, and 29.6Nm of torque @ 9,000 rpm. The engine comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. This engine on the facelift version will be BS VI compliant.
The Yamaha R3 currently retails at Rs 3.50 lakh, ex-showroom (India). The upgraded version could see a price hike of up to Rs 30,000. Once launched, the Yamaha YZF R3 will continue to with the KTM RC390, the Benelli 302R, and the Kawasaki Ninja 300.
In other news, Yamaha is also planning to increase localization of the 2019 YZF-R3, so as to allow for more competitive pricing. As is, it is one of the most expensive motorcycles in the segment.
Thoughts About The Declining Sales Figures For The Yamaha R3
Well, like we have mentioned many times before, pricing plays the most important role when it comes to retailing vehicle in India. The Indian consumer wants more bang for the buck, and also wants the buck to be as low as possible. KTM made the smartest move by retailing their 390's for under the Rs 2 lakh mark when launched and the rest is history. Yamaha will have to lower prices for the R3 if they want to increase sales figures.
