Yamaha MT-15 Arrives At Dealerships Ahead Of Launch
With the launch of the Yamaha MT-15 just a couple of days away, excitement for Yamaha India's first 'new' product in a long time has been building up. Ahead of its launch, walkaround videos of the motorcycle taken at dealerships have been leaked online.
It is very clear from the video that the Yamaha MT-15 has already started reaching dealerships, before its launch scheduled on March 15, 2019. Yamaha India had already teased the MT-15, and now these videos on the internet are doing the same.
The walkaround video might be low in quality, but it once again confirms the changes Yamaha has made to the bike for the Indian market. As we have mentioned before, the Yamaha MT-15 for India comes with several changes.
Up front it still comes with the unique headlamp setup that is sure to turn heads and attract a lot of attention. However, the MT-15 for our market missed out on Upside-Down forks up front. We get conventional telescopic forks, but we are sure Yamaha has tuned it well as we have seen the kind of handling its sibling – the Yamaha R15 – is capable of.
In most International markets, the MT-15 uses rides on body-coloured alloy wheels whereas in India, we get black coloured alloy wheels shod with MRF Revz tyres. In the Thai market, the motorcycle comes with a beefier and more muscular tank, but the Indian market misses out on that as well.
International versions also use an aluminium swingarm, but for India we get one made of pressed steel. These changes had to be incorporated in order to keep costs in check. The Yamaha MT-15 is based on the Yamaha R15 and shares most of its parts. The aforementioned parts have all been picked up from the YZF-R15 parts bin and is therefore more economical to produce.
This will allow Yamaha to price the MT-15 more aggressively, which is very much required as the MT-15 will slot into a highly-competitive segment. The Yamaha MT-15 will compete with the likes of the Bajaj NS200, KTM 125 Duke and Honda CBR150R.
The Yamaha MT-15 is powered by the same liquid-cooled, 155cc, single-cylinder engine as the Yamaha R15. A six-speed gearbox drives the rear wheel via a slipper clutch setup. It produces a maximum power output of 19.3bhp and a peak torque output of 14.7Nm. Dual-channel ABS comes fitted as standard.

The Yamaha R15 has been a great success in the Indian market despite being more track-focussed. The MT-15 is expected to build on the strengths of the R15 while offering a more comfortable riding position, and that is something that buyers in India would love.
