December is a month that usually sees manufacturers offer a host of discounts and bargains to entice customers to showrooms in a month when sales usually decline. With prices expected to rise thanks to upcoming safety norms, and manufacturers offering discounts, many two-wheeler manufacturers saw a rise in sales in December 2018, though the usual sales dip also hit a few manufacturers as well.
Hero MotoCorp, the nation's largest two-wheeler manufacturer rereported sales numbers of 4,53,985 units for the month of December 2018. However, this was a dip in terms of sales compared to last December, where the company sold nearly 19,000 more units. In December 2017 Hero had sold a total of 4,72,731 units.
TVS Motor Company, on the other hand, reported year-over-year growth of 6% for the month of December 2018, compared to the same month in 2017. The automobile manufacturer sold a total of 2,71,395 units in the final month of 2018 compared to December 2017's sales figures of 2,56,870 units. Sales of two-wheelers in India by TVS only rose by about 1% to 2,09,906 units compared to 2,07,739 in December 2017.
Another two-wheeler manufacturer reporting year-over-year growth in December is Bajaj Auto. Bajaj reported growth of a whopping 31% last month compared to December 2017 for its two-wheeler business. The company sold a total of 2,98,855 motorcycles in December 2018 compared to 2,28,762 units for the same month in 2017. Domestic sales rose by 39% to 1,57,252 units (December 2017 saw sales numbers of 1,57,252 units). Exports, on the other hand, increased by 22% to 1,41,603 units compared to 1,15,832 units in December 2017.
Japanese motorcycle manufacturer Suzuki posted year-over-year growth of 30.83% in India. Suzuki sold a total of 52,354 units sold in December 2018 as compared to 40,017 units sold in the same period last year. The Japanese manufacturer sold 43,874 units in the domestic market for the month of December 2018 compared to 32,786 units in the same period last year. Exports increased from 7,231 units for December 2017 to 8,480 units in the last month of 2018.
Royal Enfield, on the other hand, reported a dip of 13% in terms of sales for the month of December 2018 compared to the same period last year. The manufacturer which recently returned to the twin-cylinder market with new Interceptor 650 and Continental GT 650 sold a total of 58,278 units in the month of December 2018. For the same period in 2017, the company had reported sales numbers of 52,354 units. The reason for the drop was a decline in domestic sales by 14%. Royal Enfield sold 56,026 motorcycles in December 2018 compared to 65,367 units over the same period in 2017. Exports though grew, with the company exporting 2,252 motorcycles compared to the 1,601 units it shipped out last year.
