Royal Enfield Sales Drop 17 Percent — Has The Tide Turned?

Chennai based motorcycle manufacturer Royal Enfield has had a tough month. Their domestic sales have dropped by a massive 17 per cent. Exports however have increased because of the Interceptor and the Continental GT 650's.

Royal Enfield sold 62,879 motorcycle units in April 2019 as compared to 76,187 units during the April of 2018. Their 350cc fleets saw a majority of the losses while products above 500cc showed substantial growth.

According to GaadiWaadi, sales of their 350cc fleets stood at 55,522 units which is lower than last months sales for the 350cc motors. Sales figures for models above the 350cc stood at 7,357 units. The company managed to export 3,742 units during April 2019 as compared to 1,560 units during the April of 2018.

Royal Enfield has started working towards the BS-VI compliant variants of their popular models like the Classic 350 and 500 series. The update may offer a more refined engine along with improvements in performance and fuel effiency. The BS-VI models are expect to launch early next year.

In addition to the engine upgrades, Royal Enfield may make cosmetic change to make the models more appealing. RE is also working on an expansion of aftermarket accessories for the 650 twins. They say that personalization is key when it comes to touring motorcycles.

Royal Enfield said they would concentrate on more accessories for the Interceptor 650 because it is the better selling model of the twins. Both the Interceptor 650 and the Continental 650 are powered by a 648cc single-cylinder engine that features fuel injection. The engine produces 47bhp of power @ 7,250rpm and 52Nm of torque @ 5,250rpm.

The 650 twins are the first models from Royal Enfield to feature a slipper clutch, and disc brakes with dual-channel ABS. The Interceptor 650 is priced between Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 2.71 lakh ex-showroom (India). The Continental GT 650 is priced between Rs 2.66 lakh and Rs 2.86 lakh, ex-showroom (India).

Thoughts About The Falling Sales Figures Of Royal Enfield

We guess Royal Enfield had this coming. The two machines that can be talked about in terms of quality are the 650 twins. The rest of their fleets are really bad. There are European and Japanese manufacturers that offer high quality machines that are reliable and offer stress-free ride. We personally know peeps that have sold their Enfields simply because of the depressing quality the a Royal Enfield offers. RE need to understand that high quality equals consistent sales. We hope some one at the company is listening.
