Royal Enfield Naming The 838cc KX Concept The Meteor — What’s In A Name?
Chennai based motorcycle manufacturer Royal Enfield is on a mission to become the largest mid-size segment motorcycle producer. The launch of the Interceptor 650 and the Continental 650 GT was a step in that direction. Expansion plans include launching an 838cc motorcycle, the KX Concept that was showcased at the EICMA Motor Show a few months ago.
As per a patent application filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office, Royal Enfield has trademarked and registered a new name — the Royal Enfield Meteor. Some folk in the industry say that it could be a name for a new variant of the 650, others say that it is not for a new variant of the 650 twins, but a name for a new motorcycle all together.
Royal Enfield has trademarked the name 'Meteor' at the European patents office. The patent was filed during the February of 2019, and the company will have to wait until 3 July 2019 to officially own the Meteor trademark. Once achieved, Royal Enfield will be able to use the name in any way they deem fit, including naming a new motorcycle family, naming parts and accessories, and naming new riding gear and other apparel.
Royal Enfield launched a 500cc motorcycle called the Meteor way back in 1952. The motorcycle featured a parallel twin engine. This launch was followed by the Meteor 700 in 1953, and the Royal Enfield Interceptor in 1960. The Interceptor from 1960 marked the end of the Meteor 700.
This could mean on of two things — one is that Royal Enfield has plans to launch an entry level twin motor called the Meteor. It could possibly be a new version of the original 500cc twin that was launched in 1952, or a new entry level variant of the 650 twins. Two, is that Royal Enfield has it's sights set on the larger 838cc KX Concept, and want to push that in to production.
If the Meteor is actually the 838cc KX Concept, then it will be the largest, and most powerful motorcycle built by Royal Enfield. The motorcycle will be powered by an 838cc liquid cooled parallel twin engine. Royal Enfield will offer dual disc brakes in the front and one at the rear. ABS will definitely be offered as a standard.
Thoughts About The Name 'Royal Enfield Meteor'
We're not really sure about the name 'Meteor'. I mean, a meteor usually crashes and burns, burns and crashes, either or. You get the point. However, the 838cc motorcycle will push Royal Enfield to a different league and open doors to produce bigger, meaner, and louder machines in the future. We're sure the lads at Harley Davidson are worried. If not, they should be.
