Can a Royal Enfield Classic 350 tow a Toyota Fortuner? Well, a video on YouTube shows that it can, and is going viral. Royal Enfield enthusiasts are certainly impressed with the capabilities of the motorcycle.
The video uploaded by Kp Experiments shows a Royal Enfield Classic 350 pulling a Toyota Fortuner for a certain distance. It isn't that the Fortuner had broken down and needed a tow, but the video has been made to showcase the Royal Enfield's strengths.
The video has been shot on an open stretch of road in a rural area with no traffic at all. It starts off with the presenter explaining the task at hand. He explains the plan to tow the Fortuner just to check if the Royal Enfield can do so.
He then gets some rope and ties it to the footpeg brackets of the Royal Enfield and the tow hooks on the Toyota Fortuner. Immediately after, he gets on the saddle of the Royal Enfield Classic 350, thumbs the starter and engages first gear.
The Royal Enfield picks up slack and attempts pulling the full-size SUV. At first it appears to struggle as the Toyota Fortuner did not move an inch. Upon revving the motorcycle further and slipping the clutch, the bike stalls.
He fires up the engine once again and this time, the motorcycle is successful in pulling the Toyota Fortuner. It pulls the mammoth SUV for quite a distance before the presenter concludes the video and signs off.
At first look, it seems like the Royal Enfield motorcycle is extremely successful at pulling the mammoth SUV as the video shows so. However, there are several things wrong with the very concept of judging a motorcycle's capabilities by the size of the vehicle it tows, and the video too seems wrong to an extent.
Everything in the video was fine until the motorcycle's first attempt to pull the Fortuner. Upon looking at the video closely, one might be able to figure out that the driver in the Toyota Fortuner was on the brakes when the Classic 350 attempted the pull for the first time.
After the engine stalled though, it seems as if the brakes were released. This might have been done to show that it was a mammoth effort to pull such a large vehicle. However, we should all know that despite its size and weight, it shouldn't be so hard to move the Toyota Fortuner on level ground.
The Toyota Fortuner has a gross vehicle weight of around 2,600 kilograms. However, if it is parked in Neutral on level ground, two or three people can move the vehicle with a little effort. The Royal Enfield Classic 350 in comparison to human power can do the task with no effort at all.
It has a maximum torque output of 28Nm at 4,000RPM. All it takes is a little revving and clutch slipping to move the Fortuner. However, this will have an adverse effect on the mechanicals of the motorcycle.
A motorcycle engine is built very differently when compared to that of a car. A 1.0-litre motorcycle engine will be drastically different when compared to a 1.0-litre car engine. Even if the motorcycle engine is more powerful, it cannot be used to power the car effectively thanks to the weight difference.
Motorcycles are a lot lighter compared to cars and are powered by compact engines. The engine internals, clutch, gearbox, sprockets, etc are built to perform till a certain weight limit. The lightest cars are still heavier than the heaviest motorcycles!
Therefore, the 28Nm produced by this Royal Enfield Classic 350 is designed to perform well with the 192kg kerb weight of the motorcycle. Though it can move the 2.6 tonne Fortuner, it is not suggested to do so. Also, the ropes used in the video are not meant for safely towing a vehicle and the rider wasn't wearing any safety gear.
Thoughts On Royal Enfield Classic 350 Towing Toyota Fortuner
The Royal Enfield Classic 350 has a large fan following and this video of it towing the Fortuner might inspire others to do so too. But this video is not to be replicated as it has safety hazards and adversely affects the engine life of the motorcycle.
