Royal Enfield 650 Twins Cross The 15,000 Units Sales Mark In Just 10 Months
The Royal Enfield 650 twins have hit a sales milestone of 15,000 units within a span of just 10 months. This is an impressive feat as it is the first time a motorcycle in the 650cc segment has sold so much within such a short period.
Royal Enfield launched the Continental GT 650 and Interceptor 650 in the Indian market back in November 2018 and shocked the world with their pricing. Never before were 650cc motorcycle so affordable and Indian motorcycling enthusiasts were clearly loving it.
The Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 & Interceptor 650 have a lot in common but the two have completely different characteristics. The Continental GT 650 is more dedicated towards riding pleasure and fun on the curves just as a cafe racer should be.
The Interceptor 650 on the other hand is a more relaxed motorcycle that feels right at home on the highways. Our review of the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 and our review of the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 will give you an in-depth idea of what the motorcycles are like.
Both motorcycles are powered by an all-new air and oil-cooled, 648cc, parallel-twin engine. It offers a maximum power output of 47bhp at 7,250RPM and a peak torque output of 52Nm at 5,250RPM. A 6-speed gearbox assisted by a slipper clutch drives the rear wheel.
In the first month of their launch, the 650 twins sold 325 units and that was just the start. In December 2018, the RE 650 twins sold 623 units and since January 2019, the sales figures never dropped below the 1,069 units mark.
In-fact, the sales numbers only grew and peaked at 2,427 units in May 2019. The Royal Enfield 650 twins are one of the few vehicles in the entire automotive industry that didn't really get affected by the slowdown in the automotive industry.
In August 2019, almost every automotive manufacturer had already reported a slowdown and a drop in sales. Royal Enfield however reported a healthy 2,172 unit sales figure for its 650cc models.
The company is trying its best to regain its sales figures and its posture in the lower segments. Royal Enfield recently launched the Classic 350 S, which is essentially a single-channel ABS version of the Classic 350 and is therefore cheaper as well.
With the 650 twins though, Royal Enfield recently hiked prices by upto Rs 6,400, which shows the kind of confidence the company has in its 650cc products. Even after the hike in prices, the 650 twins are the most-affordable 650cc motorcycles yet.
The two motorcycles are in-fact more affordable than some lower-capacity, single-cylinder engined motorcycles like the KTM 390 Duke. The sales figures clearly position the Royal Enfield 650 twins as the leaders not just in its segment but in segments above and below it as well.
In the last ten months, 8,505 units of the Bajaj Dominar were sold, 3,296 units of the KTM 390 Duke were sold and 2,346 units of the TVS Apache RR 310 were sold. Other motorcycles like the Harley-Davidson Street 750, Kawasaki Ninja 300 and Yamaha YZF-R3 sold a lot lesser and at 15,757 units, the Royal Enfield 650 twins emerge the clear winner.
Thoughts On Royal Enfield 650 Twins Sales Crossing 15,000 Units In Just 10 Months
Royal Enfield's older generation of motorcycles like the Classic, Bullet and Thunderbird were too old-school to survive amongst the new wave of modern motorcycles. The company knew that something drastic had to be done, and they did just that with the Continental GT 650 and the Interceptor 650.
There is no doubt that the motorcycles are a huge success in the Indian market. Royal Enfield will be developing more motorcycles on the 650 platform and is also shifting its other products to a modern, modular platform. Things certainly look great for the Indian auto giant.
