Three-time MotoGP world champion, Jorge Loreno announced his retirement last week ahead of the Valencia Grand Prix, effective bringing his racing career to an end. Speculations were that Johann Zarco would replace Lorenzo, given his promising performances over the last three races as part of the LCR Honda team.
However, Alex Marquez phenomenal performance in Moto2 was too much for Repsol Honda to dismiss. The team has signed a one-year deal with Alex, just in time for testing at Valencia. It will be interesting to see both the Marquez lads compete in the 2020 season. Both will ride the Honda RC213V motorcycles.
Signing Alex Marquez make this the first-ever pairing of brothers in the same team in MotoGP. However two other brothers (also on the grid) named Espargaro, race for Aprilia (Aleix Espargaro) and KTM (Pol Espargaro).
Alex Marquez has an impressive racing history, and is very capable of handling the MotoGP litre-class machine. He became the first rider the win the Moto2 World Championship immediately after clinching the Moto3 title.
Alex Marquez is the fifth Spaniard to win the Moto2 title, along with Toni Elias, Marc Marquez, Pol Espargaro, and Tito Rabat. In addition, he is the eighth Spaniard to clinch a Moto2 title.
Alex Marquez has had 10 podium finishes this season, and has had 23 in the Moto2 class. His 23 finishes equals Pol Espargaro's, who stands at fifth place on the list of riders with most podium finishes in the class.
Alex Marquez has been on the podium 38 times in his racing career, and has won 12 races across Moto3 and Moto2 championships. He also clinched 15 pole positions and 17 fastest laps. He has competed in eight world championships - three in Moto3 and five in Moto2.
Thoughts About Alex Marquez Racing For Repsol Honda In The GP Class
This is is exciting. It will be interesting to see how both Alex and Marc perform, and compete against each other. Marc is three years older than Alex, and it technically close to retirement. While we expect the Marc to groom Alex to be a future world champion, we're also expecting rivalry.
Some where, we have our fingers crossed that a certain Valentino Rossi takes advantage of the rivalry between the Marquez brothers and walks away with one last championship under his belt.
