KTM 125 Duke Sells 3,014 Units In February 2019 — More Than All Other KTM Motorcycles Combined

The KTM 125 Duke becomes the best selling KTM model in the Indian market. Reports have revealed that 3,014 units of the KTM 125 Duke were sold in February 2019. This figure makes it the best-selling KTM India motorcycle yet.

This would come as a surprise for many because quite a few automotive experts had suggested that the KTM 125 Duke would not do well in the Indian market. There were many reasons for the experts to think this way and one of the main reasons was KTM's performance pedigree.

KTM has always been known to produce high-performance motorcycles and a low-performance KTM at a high price is not something one would want to buy. But the sales figures have proven this logic to be wrong.

Yet another factor that caused many to think that the 125 Duke would fail in India is the typical Indian motorist's perception of a 125cc motorcycle. A 125cc motorcycle is generally expected to be frugal, comfortable, ergonomic and inexpensive to purchase.

A technologically advanced motorcycle like the 125 Duke cannot be possibly priced on par with other 125cc segment motorcycles and hence one would think that people would shy away from buying it.

This is also the reason for KTM to have kept the 125 Duke and RC 125 off Indian roads though they were being produced in and exported from India. However, it seems like KTM sensed an opportunity opening up in the market and launched the 125 Duke back in November 2018 at a price of Rs 1.18 lakh (ex-showroom).

Soon after its launch, the baby Duke started selling well. In December 2018, the 125 Duke recorded more sales than all KTM models combined - 2,414 units. In January 2019 though sales dropped to 1,402 units and it was assumed that only initial sales were high as there was a rush to purchase the motorcycle. In February though, sales rose to the highest number yet, with 3,014 units sold.

The KTM 125 Duke features the styling and cycle parts of the 200 Duke but comes with a small engine. It is powered by a liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, 124.7cc engine with a maximum power output of 14.3bhp and a peak torque output of 12Nm. Single-channel ABS is offered as standard equipment.

Thoughts On KTM 125 Duke Sales Figures Being Higher Than Other KTM Models

KTM has always been known to manufacture pocket-rockets. The success of the 125 Duke and RC 125 in the European market also stands testimony to this. However, the same success being repeated in the Indian market only shows that Indian motorcyclists are opening up to new segments and new types of vehicles.

With the overwhelming success in the 125cc segment, KTM might also consider launching the RC 125 in India as it is already being produced here.
